Big Dev played against England in the Six Nations opener, went off injured shortly after half time and didn’t feature again after that. There’s a lot of sentimentality here from the pretend rugby haters to an old crowd favourite and great servant. There’s no sentiment in professional sport though and to select an injury crocked veteran would be a dereliction of duty by Coach Schmidt.

One example: Ireland got a lower score than south africa and France for security. In their bid they had put in “no terrorism here lads, we’re secure”. Nothing about crowd management or event security or input from an Garda siochana. The equivalent of leaving a section blank and getting no marks for it. Seriously, they’re idiots.

They actually argued that Ireland’s connection with the USA meant more people in the USA would watch it and this would help rugby to break America. It was a plank of their application. Pure shite.

I’m sure arguments can be made as to whether the application could have been strengthened. Ultimately I’m not sure it mattered though. South Africa scored higher than France and didn’t win. The final decision was based on money and politicking as much as it was on bid quality, that’s where the IRFU got really out-manoeuvred

He lasted most of his career, predominantly coached by Joe at club and country, without any significant injury profile. He just got unlucky that his first serious injury came in his 30s.

So I dont know is the answer ro your question, but the evidence would suggest he managed away fine in that game plan for a long time
