Rugby World Cup 2023/ Crochet & Knitting chit chat

If this world cup has taught us anything it is that tactics are a mugs game. This bloody war room with ear pieces and clip charts- i didn’t win senior county and provincial medals by relying on elevated views and earpieces

Don’t need stats we win two (2) penalties defending Doris in the first half and Bundee just before the near miss try on 70 minutes, NZ won the ground battle decisively

Unless you’re from Limerick.

I commented to a lapsed poster as that happened that it was effectively a Mayo OG.

Mentally broken and now with more baggage to carry.

We were in reverse on the wings the only ground gained was down the centre Why did we keep attempting Hail Marys to the right wing? That’s all , surely they could see and call it from in high?

We are at the same of juncture as many a time before. Winning six nations is great but means nothing now. Some have confirmed retirement others may come, but the focis should be peaking in 4 years and not carrying fellas to retire in the meantime. Mistakes of the past BOD and Darcy for example playing into year 3 of a world cup cycle shouldnt be repeated. Sexton played at top level until he finished as did best for the last WC. No hanger ons to get a lions tour, thats a load of bollocks.

Hard to justify anyone over 31 playimg in next years six nations. Based on the squad you can pick off who needs to be moved out for 2027

Ryan Baird (Leinster/Dublin University)(13) - Should be there
Finlay Bealham (Connacht/Buccaneers)(32) - aged 32, should be moved on
Tadhg Beirne (Munster/Lansdowne)(41) - aged 31 might be there
Jack Conan (Leinster/Old Belvedere)(39) aged 30 might be there
Caelan Doris (Leinster/St Mary’s College)(31) - will be there
Tadhg Furlong (Leinster/Clontarf)(67) aged 30 - good chance if still at the level
Iain Henderson (Ulster/Academy)(74) - gone
Rob Herring (Ulster/Ballynahinch)(37) - aged 33 gone
Ronan Kelleher (Leinster/Lansdowne)(21) - will be there
David Kilcoyne (Munster/UL Bohemians)(52) aged 34 - gone
Jeremy Loughman (Munster/Garryowen)(3) - aged 28 good chance will be around but someone else might be uncovered
Joe McCarthy (Leinster/Dublin University)(3) - will be there
Peter O’Mahony (Munster/Cork Constitution)(96) - gone, no point in hanging onto for a token lions tour
Tom O’Toole (Ulster/Ballynahinch)(11) - will be there
Andrew Porter (Leinster/UCD)(54) - will be there
James Ryan (Leinster/UCD)(55) - will be there
Dan Sheehan (Leinster/Lansdowne)(18) - will be there
Josh van der Flier (Leinster/UCD)(52) - will be there

Backs (15):

Bundee Aki (Connacht/Galwegians)(47) aged 33 - to be moved on
Ross Byrne (Leinster/UCD)(21) - aged 28 should be there
Craig Casey (Munster/Shannon)(12) - will be there
Jack Crowley (Munster/Cork Constitution)(6) - will be there
Keith Earls (Munster/Young Munster)(100) - retired confirmed
Jamison Gibson-Park (Leinster)(26) aged 31 might be there
Mack Hansen (Connacht/Corinthians)(16) - will be there
Robbie Henshaw (Leinster/Buccaneers)(64) - will be there
Hugo Keenan (Leinster/UCD)(31) - will be there
James Lowe (Leinster)(21) - aged 31 might be
Stuart McCloskey (Ulster/Bangor)(13) aged 31 might be
Conor Murray (Munster/Garryowen)(106) - to be moved on
Jimmy O’Brien (Leinster/Naas)(6) - will be
Garry Ringrose (Leinster/UCD)(51) - will be
Jonathan Sexton (Leinster/St Mary’s College)(captain)(113) - retired confirmed

Lads are overthinking this.

NZ were the better side. They did the basics better.

End of story

Only Once have we been knocked out of the competition by the eventual winners

New Zealand were shit. A couple of lucky punts and fortunate breaks. All their defence had to do was stand still and let ireland run into them, heroically…

Only once have we been beaten in a knockout match by a team that won its next match.

1987 - lost to Australia who lost to France who lost to New Zealand
1991 - lost to Australia who beat New Zealand and England
1995 - lost to France who lost to South Africa who beat New Zealand
1999 - lost to Argentina who lost to France who beat New Zealand then lost to Australia
2003 - lost to France who lost to England who beat Australia
2011 - lost to Wales who lost to France who lost to New Zealand
2015 - lost to Argentina who lost to Australia who lost to New Zealand
2019 - lost to New Zealand who lost to England who lost to South Africa

He’s from Mayo ffs

Six teams left - one for the top and five others.

Not to mention NZ played only 60 minutes with 15 players

If you go through those quarter final defeats, there’s 5 straight off that Ireland were rank outsiders with no chance of winning, the first four and New Zealand 2019.

Argentina 2015, Ireland were decimated with 5 players missing/suspended that had beaten France in final pool game week before. Jared Payne, Sexton, O’Connell, O’Mahony, O’Brien.

Wales 2011 and New Zealand 2023 were two that were very much 50/50 and needed the moment to be seized. Ireland completely fluffed their lines tonight against what is a decidedly average New Zealand team.

Biggest failure for a team in green playing against 14 men since the 1996 All-Ireland Hurling final.

1987 Ireland hadn’t a prayer.
1991 was the great near miss above expectations.
1995 we hadn’t a prayer.
1999 we would have lost the quarter-final but to not get there at all was a humiliation.
2003 was a pathetic performance in the quarter-final.
2007 a total disaster.
2011 was the great spurned opportunity.
2015 though the team was decimated was still a spurned opportunity and the first 10 minutes were a disgrace.
2019 a disaster.
2023 they died with their boots on but serious regrets.
