But they didn’t. The so called “referendum” was a total sham, like everything else given the title of “democracy” in Russia. 30% of the eligble “voted” and only half those voted for what Russia wanted.
You’re one of these people that thought Saddam Hussein’s 99% was a fair election, aren’t you?
If you believe an imperialist dictatorship should have the right to simply invade a smaller country, and go back on international treaties they have signed - as you clearly do - just say so. That’s what the Nazis did to Poland. And there’s sod all difference between their ideology and modus operandi and the Russians’ one.

I pulled it from where the Russians themselves admitted it.
Yesterday, however, according to a major Ukrainian news site , TSN.ua, the website of the President of Russia’s Council on Civil Society and Human Rights (shortened to President’s Human Rights Council) posted a report that was quickly taken down as if it were toxic radioactive waste. According to this purported report about the March referendum to annex Crimea, the turnout of Crimean voters was only 30 percent. And of these, only half voted for the referendum –meaning only 15 percent of Crimean citizens voted for annexation.
And this was consistent with polling.
What happened on Sunday in Crimea was an electoral farce. Referenda cannot be held under military occupation. Referenda cannot have two options that have essentially the same meaning. Referenda cannot be held when all of the propaganda is generated by the state. Referenda cannot be held when the local television stations are closed and journalists are beaten and intimidated. Even in these conditions, the claim that 75 percent of the population took part and more than 96 percent voted for annexation to Russia is untenable. We know from years of surveys that a majority of Crimeans did not favor incorporation by Russia. One large survey showed 33 percent support for this idea in 2011, down to 23 percent in 2013. The Crimean Tatars boycotted the “referendum,” as did many Ukrainians, since it was declared illegal and unconstitutional by the Ukrainian government. The recorded electoral frequency in the city of Sevastopol was 123 percent.

Russia has been committing genocide and ethnic cleansing against the native Crimean Tatars for centuries.
Curiously enough, when Ukraine controlled Crimea, that discrimination stopped and the Tatars returned in droves.
But since 2014, under the Russians, it has been happening again.
In the five years since Russia forcibly annexed Crimea, wresting the lucrative ports away from Ukraine, life for the 250,000 Tatar Muslims of Crimea has disintegrated.
Tatar Muslims have been denied work, their language, their newspapers, and their very way of life in a bid to push them off the peninsula.
For their sauce alone they should be exiled to Antarctica
