Second Captains

Dead right. Whatever about showing a horrendous clip of O Gara in an add, I don’t need 15 clips of Murph as a geek child. They also need to decide what Early is for. He’s only good on football and then only when allowed ramble like a loon, which isn’t suited to tv.

Not if they’re taking their feedback from twitter anyway. Fair enough there’s going to be nerves and given the fact that they sold themselves as a group they had to find places for the likes of Earley and Murphy but if this is to work you hit the nail on the head.

Also, its either live or it isn’t, the lads done live radio and have reacted to breaking stories, not to do so tonight is either bullshit or its simply not live.

Much like OTB, there is a market out there for this sort of show, but not in THAT format, here’s hoping the kinks will be ironed out.
What was the point of those guests?

 • Oisin McConville? Have him on next week before the AI final and talk about that.
 • Richie Sadlier? Didn’t ask him about Ireland getting our WC campaign ending tonight
 • Ronan O’Gara? Didn’t ask him about the Heineken Cup collapse
 • Dervla O’Rourke? Gowl.

One of the greatest hurling finals of all time played at the weekend and not a mention of it. Looks like the agenda/guests for the show were arranged last week.
Nail on the head.

Our stinging criticism will surely be taken on board for next weeks filming next weekend.

An hour is probably too short. It won’t give them time to have interviews of any real substance if they are trying to squeeze in all the gimmicks as well.

It was Hardly worth missing Sarah McInerney on Vinny Browne over it!?

Thought it was okay and has potential to improve. Wouldn’t be too critical of it but some of the gimmicks were a bit pointless.

Show has potential. Better than anything else on tv at this time of night. No mention of hurling a serious black mark.

As I said, Murph is a serious spare. Early didn’t add anything tonight either.

I thought the O’Gara interview was decent but it tailed off a bit. He’s always honest though and more interesting than the usual bland sports star. That segment could be awful with another interviewee.

McConville answering the question about running against a drug cheat was a bit bizarre. I wanted to hear what it felt like for Derval. she was beaten out of a european gold by Yanit a few years back iirc. She must despise her.

would like to see a panel of the likes of trevor brenann, paul carberry, john mullane, ollie murphy and st. pats striker Anto ´bisto´flood …that wud be epic viewing…

Early is versatile enough to be able to comment intelligently on other sports but he’s too laid back for what is a very forced format. His humour is totally ill-suited to the type of zaniness that was on show tonight and it showed.

Does anybody else thing this whole leaving newstalk setting the podcast on the times followed by this programme is an extremely elaborate and roundabout way for eoin mcdevitt to get a proper job with rte instead of bill o herily.

It seems to be the only thing that makes sense to me after watching the programme.

Obviously that would make sense. But this probably had to be approved up the wazoo by some heads in RTÉ. Hence, heavy rugby emphasis, no hurling, gimmickry appropriated from British shows.

Jaysus ye are a very negative bunch. This will be a hit.

Not hard be a hit on RTE, we want it to be good

It will be fine.

McDevitt’s Setanta programme was a proper look at sports and that sort of panel discussion covering a variety of sports. It was often excellent viewing. This wasn’t much to do with sport at all.

We here at TFK don’t merely settle for ‘fine’

That’s true. Whatever became of that?

Agreed. That was excellent.

Lads on the Internet are the shitest shower of hipsters you’d come across, no forum, thread or post is cool enough; crawling over each other to moan about something they’re still reading. Boards.ie is still available - go read that and I’m sure there’s a thread to moan about that too.

Yeah that’s a good point. To the extent that Early appealed to anyone it was because of his tangential rambling which was often very entertaining and certainly quite unique for a sports show. On the radio it didn’t really matter if five or ten minutes were wasted pointlessly as they had so much time and because the listeners are only half paying attention anyway.

On TV that same pointless ramble would be unbearably awkward because people are giving their full attention to it and wondering what the hell the point of it is. And if he has to prepare material because of that, then that’s going to come across and somewhat undermine the whole appeal of his shtick.
