3-5-2 gave us a solid enough shape but I thought we got the sum total of fuck all from out wing backs which negates the positives of the formation somewhat.
Donât think we have any real alternatives to Doherty and Stevens either

Like Conor Delaney versus Dessie Hutchinson. Cleared a world of ball but found wanting in the crucial moments
We basically have to beat Serbia in Dublin now or we can forget about qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar. I would be surprised to see us attain anything from the two games with Portugal so tonightâs result is a big blow. We needed our standard away draw tonight.
Positives: Cullen & Mollumby decent in midfield
Robinson had a fine game
Dara OâShea considering age etc did well
Formation probably suits us best based on what players we have
Egan in for Clark and Randolph back in goals will make a difference for us. Hendrick should NEVER again play for us he is God awful.
You could play Coleman right wing. Doherty offers nothing at all.
Only alternative at left wing back is probably Brady
3-2 is a fair scoreline on balance of play. I thought they were there for the taking but as expected retreated once we scored the goal. Getting to half time 1-0 up would have been massive. Scotland were very impressive against Serbia in the playoffs. I think they had a few injuries and McTominay had to play in back 3 in that game so Kenny or players shouldnât have felt overawed. Iâm disappointed we didnât kick on but with a semi competent keeper we could have taken at least a point.
I think itâs goal difference for World Cup qualifying. Head to head only matters way down the list.
There were some positives, but Tadic caused absolute wreck. Heâs a really classy footballer and thereâs no way that we should be giving him the space he had for the third goal. Doherty got caught, and Cullen got sucked in.
Mitrovicâs chip was class tbf.
I thought Robinson was our best player. I do like Browne & I think Cullen has a bit about him. I also thought Connolly did alright. I think the formation does suit us more but we probably need more threat from Stevens & Doherty. Centre-backs were probably the issue, youâd expect better from Clark. Some of our passing in midfield was a little conservative at times when there was space ahead.
That was a class chip from mitrovic in fairness. Even allowing for Travers being at sea
Assume Portugal beating Serbia on Saturday is result we want.
Molumby did alright but he has a bad habit of keeping his eyes on the ball when itâs at his feet rather than seeing whatâs on
Cullen getting blamed for Shane Long turning his back on the ball
A lot of reference to Shane Longâs pace . Is it still there at 34 ?
Itâs a pity Joey Nâdo was already capped 13 times for Cameroon when he arrived in Ireland. We could have nationalised him back in the day.
I would say its more tenacity than pace
Heâs a professional athlete
Mitrovic just had to get the ball airborne in the direction of the goal. He didnât need to worry about power or pinpoint trajectory given just how poor Travers positioning was. He made it easy for him. When the camera zoomed out just as he was about to kick it I said to myself this is an open goal.
