Shinty & International Rules Series Thread - again, yes it's happening fucking again

I think this could be his year to be honest Runt. Rogers would have been Down’s primary midfielder but his lack of action in the latter stages will rule him out. Same with Earley at Kildare. Cork have no outstanding midfielder. Michael Dara McAuley will get a nomination, but was he really that good this year? How about Tyrone, no one out standing there either, same with Meath. Its been a relatively bad year for inter county midfield this year imo.

I didnt see a better exponent of midfield play this year than Galvin. He’d be on my team as things stand.

Kalum King and Michael Dara McAuley are the 2 most consistent performers this year.

Kalum King and Paddy Keenan for me. McAuley pushing hard for a spot. Ambrose Rogers might have got on had he stayed injury free. There are no other contenders.

Australia named their squad today:

Todd Banfield (Brisbane Lions) - young red haired midfield player. Not long playing, but did well for the Lions this year.
Eddie Betts (Carlton) - small nippy skillful goal sneak player. can be great, but can go missing in games.
Matthew Boyd (Western Bulldogs) - been on the dogs team for last 5 or 6 years. Midfield player who gets ont he ball a lot
Daniel Cross (Western Bulldogs) - much the same as Boyd, but more of a playmaker
Patrick Dangerfield (Adelaide Crows) - one of the crows better players this year, scored a good few goals too.
Paul Duffield (Fremantle) - Half back, really played himself into one of Freos main players this year.
Dustin Fletcher (Essendon) - the old full back. think he played in goal for them the last time out.
James Frawley (Melbourne) - young tough corner back. won Australian equivalent of an all star this year.
Bryce Gibbs (Carlton) - half back known for his kicking ability and gets on the ball a lot and sets up a lot of play from deep
Sam Gilbert (St Kilda) - can play at half back, and makes a difference when pushed up forward. good all rounder
Tyson Goldsack (Collingwood) - on the fringes of the Pies team, so bit of an odd choice. plays at half back
Adam Goodes (Sydney Swans) - legend of the game, great player for Sydney. plays at ruck (tall midfield) or up forward
Brad Green (Melbourne) - experienced player who kicked a lot of goals last year.
Garrick Ibbotson (Fremantle) - young player who helped in freos good season, has real speed
Kieran Jack (Sydney Swans) - young midfield player who gets on a lot of ball. won sydneys best player this year
Jarrad McVeigh (Sydney Swans) - won sydneys best player last year! good midfield creative player
Leigh Montagna (St Kilda) - half forward player who sets up more than he scores
Jack Riewoldt (Richmond) - full forward who is first cousin of Nick at St Kilda. was the top scorer in AFL last year
Kade Simpson (Carlton) - has played in Int rules before, a half back for Carlton who is a great reader and tackler
Dane Swan (Collingwood) - should have won the player of the year this year. was superb all year. gets through a serious amount of posession.
Travis Varcoe (Geelong Cats) - speedy player who really nailed down his spot this year. runs with the ball a lot
David Wojcinski (Geelong Cats) - in the same mould as Varcoe, but tends to play off the half back line. really quick.

not that strong a squad. a lot of quality in about half of it, but a good few players I wouldnt have thought ‘elite’. Gary Ablett expressed his desire to play, and suprised he wasnt selected. The good player they do have tho are elite and on the top of the list of the best in the AFL.

any word on any Irish squad yet? Setanta still not making himself available? Bit shit really, he has never made himself available to play in any of the series. Theres none of that Aussie side really huge or imposing. They often had selected a few hardmen type players, but most on that list are half backs or midfield. Its a real running and quick side picked.

setanta was on it one year wasn’t he?

could well be wrong, but I dont recall him ever being there. there was one year he was injured, but any time he hasnt been injured he hasnt been available.

Think I remember him starting a match but going off injured and was never to be seen again.

yup, as I said, was probably wrong on it. just checked it there, he was on the squad in 2004. dont remember him doing anything in it tho anyway. shame he wont play now or in the other ones. would be a big addition to the side and another helping hand in getting experience in tackles etc.

Yeah think he went off injured after 5 or 10 mins.
Don’t think it’s been posted anywhere here before but I wonder how he’s doing in the game over there?

There was a few of the Irish lads knocking about the greyhound stadium Friday night.
Anthony Tohill, Bomber Liston etc.

not sure. I think there was an aussie rules thread somewhere on the interweb that might have something on how he is getting on. think hes doing shite lately tho

I stupidly waited until now to go and get my tickets for this.
Looks like all that are left are the uncovered stand right at the very end.

real men stand on the terrace runt

No they don’t

With your contacts surely you are always front and centre?

Terraces like Hill 16

The squad is as folows:

Colm Begley (Laois)
Bernard Brogan (Dublin)
Graham Canty (Cork)
Seán Cavanagh (Tyrone)
Martin Clarke (Down)
Stephen Cluxton (Dublin)
Brendan Donaghy (Armagh)
Leighton Glynn (Wicklow)
Daniel Goulding (Cork)
James Kavanagh (Kildare)
Paddy Keenan (Louth)
Tadhg Kennelly (Kerry)
Seán McDermott (Roscommon)
Ciarán McKeever (Armagh)
Kevin McKernan (Down)
Brendan Murphy (Carlow)
Michael Murphy (Donegal)
Kevin Reilly (Meath)
Michael Shields (Cork)
Tommy Walsh (Kerry)

Standby Players:
Emmet Bolton (Kildare)
Gary Brennan (Clare)
Gary Connaughton (Westmeath)
Benny Coulter (Down)
Eamonn Fennell (Dublin)
Johnny McCarthy (Limerick)
Niall McNamee (Offaly)

The County Championships eliminating a few players I though would make it. Donnaghy would surely be in there if Stacks werent in the final.

Shields probably won’t make it either, the Barrs are favourites to win sunday, and then would be in final on the following week.
