Sutherland was asked by Fitzgerald to become EU Commissioner because his mate James Dooge wouldnât take the role.
Being an EU Commissioner wouldnât have paid him nearly what being a silk would have.
His career could have gone a few ways. If he had got into the DĂĄil he might not have been nearly as successful as he was internationally. If it wasnât for the EU role he might have become a Judge eventually.
Either way the man was immensely gifted and got things done.

I spotted him coming out of Lansdowne Road (wearing his Lansdowne RFC tie) after the Ireland v England game in 2015 and he had the look of a very ill man. I did subsequently think of putting him in my Celebrity Deaths predictions but I resisted the temptation and played by the rules and didnât utilize this piece of insider knowledge.
