RTE giving him too much latitude.
Thatâs half the problem. Despite the amount of televised games growing astronomically over the last 25 years or so I can only ever recall Marty, Ger, Darragh Moloney and Jim Carney commentating on live championship hurling matches on rte in that span.
No fresh blood whatsoever. I find Paraic Lodge good on the radio, would like to see how he does on the tv
Canning still has it.
Great turn of phrase and can really capture the big moments.
What Jim Carney specialised in was commentating on the real big game of the day that inexplicably wasnât one of the two live televised matches, but would attract the bulk of the interest in terms of the phone calls to the highlights programme and newspaper reporting the following day.
I just want to clarify for any late comers to todayâs posts on this thread that Jim Carney is still alive and it is Jim Fahy who is no longer with us.
Come out of the fog , canning consistently stinks the joint out âŚhe was the greatest recruiter for lads turning down the sound on tv and listening to matches on radio
Canât agree. He has a lovely air of authority about him that commands respect.
He wipes the floor with the Sky GAA commentators anyway.
Thereâs a guy on the BBC, Niblock I think thatâs pretty good and young enough too.
Donât know how anyone could have listened to that Micheal OâMuircheartaigh. An appalling commentator.
âHere come the Meath men â⌠I used to shit my pants when he said that and I wasnât even at the game âŚbrilliant âŚ
Garry Mac Donncha is the best radio commentator, far better as Gaeilge though.
Leave this forum and never return.
Big game voice is almost everything for a commentator and can paper over other weaknesses.
Ger Canning has a big game voice but has been very patchy at best in terms of in finding the words for the best part of 20 years. I first noticed this on his commentary of the 2002 All-Ireland football final, which didnât really hit the mark for such an auspicious occasion, though Martin Carney saved the day with his beautifully ascending âwhaaat a result, Gerâ over pictures of that Down man being pushed back by the stewards.
Darragh Moloney has a big game voice too.
Marty doesnât. Heâs far too jovial.
Jimmy Smyth had the big game voice. Sidey doesnât. Niblock has slightly more of a big game voice but is not nearly at Smythâs level.
Canning most definitely has the big game voice.
When you think of the All time classic games of the past 15 years (AIHF 2009, AIHF 2010, AIHF 2014, AIFF 2011 & AIFF 2017) they all had some vintage Canning moments.
Maloney has gone backwards as a commentator quite noticeably in recent times while Marty never really had it.
Of all the commentators that gives a game life, none better than Brian Carthy on rte radio.
Carthy sounds like a dynamo I had on my pushbike in the 80âs
Wouldnât know what that sounds like but I think personally heâs fantastic.
Sad news for all the LFC family. A backroom giant.
Wim Jansen RIP
A hero of both the Orange and the Green.
Indeed. I can remember him quite well from the 1978 World Cup in Argentina.
