We used to be a proper country.
When we lauded gombeenism.
Correct me if I’m wrong here because I never followed the politics of the FAI that much.
Was the whole gist of the George The Greek thing that Joe Delaney approached this guy to try and source extra tickets for Irish supporters at USA '94?
He paid a load of money on the promise of these tickets?
And then George The Greek did a runner with the money and no tickets ever materialised?
Then Joe Delaney paid the money back to the FAI out of his own pocket?
Is all that correct?
Yes.
All he ever wanted was what was best for the fans.
Same as his son.
He wasn’t the worst oul’ skin.
He paid something like £200k out of his own money.
There’s a great story about Joe Delaney bringing Shay Brennan (European Cup Winner with Man United in 1968) to Waterford United as Player/Manager when he fell on hard times in the 1970’s.
Joe had him working the bar in a nightclub in Tipp Town at the same time. I think he was living with the Delaney’s too.
Sounds like exploitation.
Correct, led indirectly to what was known as the Night of the Long Knives in the Westbury in February 1996 when Dela Snr fell on his sword
If John was to come home for the funeral, I presume he’d be arrested on entry to Ireland?
Surprised @Cheasty hasn’t commented on Roddy Forsyth’s passing
Edit he hasn’t passed. I’ve been mugged off by Greg Allen on Twitter
He’s not dead.
A brilliant reporter and summariser. I particularly associate him with the season Celtic stopped 10 in a row. He used write a column on Scottish football for “The Title” every week and then he was on the radio at weekends.
@Rocko used to go around playing on his mp3 player (remember them?) what I think was Roddy Forsyth’s post match BBC 5 Live report from the day Celtic stopped the 10.
“Scarves, flags, banners, green & white hoops, raised in triumph…”
I used to read that column in The Title too.
I didn’t really pay much attention to him in the last good few years. Was he a Rangers man though?
I remember him on BBC Radio 5 back in the day.
He reported on the main Scottish match.
He’s Rangers. On the radio since the 80’s.
Think he was informally known as Roddy The Proddy but in a friendly banter, non-sectarian way. Of course, being a proddy is fine & doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a Rangers fan either. It’s just that he happens to be too. I’m non-religious myself but I think the proddy belief of communion being a symbol rather than Jesus Christ’s actual body makes more sense.
No celibacy, women priests, don’t mind the pope, don’t be worshiping Saints. It’s hard to argue with a lot of it really.
Too soon for hamish harding?
Jesus wasn’t a Catholic. Following the teaching of the Bible is the best way to live your life.
“My chief of staff, Leo McGarry, insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself or is it okay to call the police?”
"Here’s one that’s really important cause we’ve got a lot of sports fans in this town: touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean. Leviticus 11:7 If they promise to wear gloves can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point?"Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother, John, for planting different crops side by side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads?“Think about those questions, would you?”
