Sinn Fein - Populism and Partionism

That’s not the discussion we were having. I would be happy to dive into a discussion on our reliance on MNCs but given that you claimed in one post that we didn’t tax them enough but then acknowledged you were wrong when presented with the facts, I am not confident that you are sufficiently well read on the topic to justify a meaningful discussion.

“Ireland needs to raise more revenue to improve housing and health”
“Ireland need to turf out the MNCs who provide a large share of taxes and nationalise the economy”

Some of them don’t even pay any tax on billions on profit. What’s your take on that? That specifically and not just your usual deflection horseshit.

The issue is that MNCs have Ireland by the balls when it comes to CT. They know the state are fucked without them in terms of jobs and taxes and can renege on their tax bills. You just don’t want to discuss the fundamental reasons behind this clusterfuck of a situation.

Are there any other countries in Europe as beholden on MNCs as Ireland? I believe I’m still waiting for an answer.

You fail to see the failing when you’ve thrown your eggs into one basket, so much that you’ve now lost the leverage to call the shots.

Your sort of logic there pretty much exemplifies a real naivety and failure to grasp the larger picture.

Let’s take Intel as an example.

Currently building a new fab - few thousand construction workers

Few more thousand people work in Intel

That’s a chunk of tax before we get to CT

But yeah let’s throw our MNCs

And yet a few posts ago you claimed they didn’t pay tax, but then acknowledged you were wrong. You can’t be taken seriously on this matter.

What’s the alternative to MNCs?

We’re one of the richest countries in the world off the back of it.

We even welcome economic migrants from the UK

SMEs

Strong domestic based industry

Investment in better public services and infrastructures.

Just use Sweden as an example here.

https://www.largestcompanies.com/toplists/sweden/largest-employers

You notice anything about those companies?

And yet have a housing and health crises and don’t have the capital resources to address them.

Something doesn’t add up.

Ireland is not the only country with issues.

Sweden’s PM just resigned over housing.

You couldn’t make it up.

Plenty capital resources for health spending. Amongst the highest in the OECD. You can argue about value for money.

Do you have a similar list for Ireland’s largest employers?

You’re all over the place here.

Firstly, on “short term”, I’d say we’re almost 50 years into the MNC involvement in Ireland and certainly over 30 years on a large scale so you may want to let that go.

Then you want “major capital investment” - presumably paid for by someone - while at the same time we need a “big nationalisation drive”. I suppose your answer to closing that particular loop is to borrow - but aren’t you concerned then surely we’ll be back at your original concern “like taking money from a loan shark … you end up being had by the balls”?

The MNC model might have concentration risk but it has been a game-changer for this country and I certainly would be happier with it then whatever incoherent economic mumbo-jumbo you seem to be advocating.

Deflection Tim.

Saint Jacinda is presiding over a massive property crisis over in New Zealand. How can that be?

You just posted a load of Swedish companies and have been at pains to compare to them.

Something clearly doesn’t add up in Sweden.

Saint Jacinda is keeping up the noble tradition of the NZ Labour Party from the 1980s and targeting neo liberal economic growth.

He seems to be under the impression that those employees are all in Sweden.

He’s been badly caught out here discussing economic issues.

Housing is in demand because of all the people who want to live and work here. Housing in any major capital city of a successful economy is always in demand and in short supply. We have the tools to fix it as we have a successful economy.

The health system could be better and access needs to be improved.

People need to be careful what they wish for and remember we didn’t always have a country where young people had a future and a good quality of life.
