Former New Zealand rugby league international Shontayne Hape and 20-year-old lock Courtney Lawes have been named in the England squad for the RBS 6 Nations Championship.

Lawes’ Northampton team-mates Chris Ashton and Ben Foden have also been included.

Hape has been a key player for Bath since signing from Rugby League in 2008, though the club is currently struggling in the Guinness Premiership.

England struggled for penetration and guile at centre during a disappointing November Series and having had two years to adapt to the Union code, Hape is seen as a player who may have the right mix of speed, power and handling skills to unlock aggressive defences.

Saints trio Lawes, Ashton and Foden are also selections geared towards solving England’s difficulties with cutting edge out wide and dynamism up front.

Wing Ashton’s impressive strike-rate in the Guinness Premiership has attracted attention, while Foden has long been seen as a potential star at international level.

Lawes, just 20 years old, made a 12-minute appearance off the bench for England in their 18-9 defeat to Australia in November but was subsequently dropped from the squad.

England subsequently secured a narrow win over Argentina but were then beaten by New Zealand.

Delon Armitage, Riki Flutey, Toby Flood, Nick Easter and Lee Mears were also named in the squad.

Was just reading through 6 nations 2009 thread ( I truly am a sad bastard)… and what a thread it was. The weekend of the Welsh game among human kind’s finest drunken posting

think it could be over by game 3
It would be some achievement to win the championship, a double slam would be unbelievable
I’d settle for 4/5 with a decent show in Paris

Team:
Kearney
Shaggy
BOD
Darce
Earls
Jonno
Reddan
Cian
Fla (hopefully)
BUll
POC
DOC
Sean OBrien
Heaslip
Ferris

Shaggy Reddan SOB? You’re talking through your hole there WBY.

Plan to go to the Wales match myself. Haven’t seen a rugger game in GAA HQ yet.

My team

Kearney

Bowe
BOD (Capt)
D’Arcey
Shaggy

Jonno
TO’L

Healy
Flanners
Bull Hayes
DO’C
PO’C
Ferris
O’Brien
Heaslip

Jennings will start for Leinster this weekend and O’Brien will be on the bench but I’d say he might make the starting 15 alright, was excellent when he came on v Fiji and the 'Boks. Does depend on how the next two weekends go, you could see changes at 11, 12, 10 and in the back row. Please God injuries won’t cause too much hassle to the team. 4/5 is definately achievable, 5/5 I doubt it. Looking at the English squad it’s weak in large area’s of it… can’t believe they’re bringing back Shaw again. Finally, I’d love to see Casey get on at least the bench for Ireland… okay I’m talking about Shaw for England maybe going to the well too much but if he was English he’d be captain of their team. I reckon he should be getting an extended period in the 22 squad.

You not think Bob is far too slow for this level Locke? I can see the point in SOB playing, but for the exact saqme reason surely Earls should be on the wing instead of Shaggy who wont see another WC?

Bowe for me is a cert on one wing, and in fairness to Shaggy he’s in great form, fantasic finisher and a big mutha to boot. Earls is class but we’ll see how the next to 'Ken cup games go.

Just have a soft spot for Big Bob, EOS didn’t give him a look in, the Youghal prick. Casey plays with a relation of mine with the Irish, sound bloke by all accounts.

O’Brien will be the Irish openside for many years to come but I cannot see himdislodging Wallace this season barring Walace getting injured…

My team for Italy

Kearney
Bowe
BOD
Wallace
Earls

Sexton
O’Leary

Healy
Flannery
Hayes
O’Connell
O’Callaghan
Ferris
Wallace
Heaslip

Subs:
Horan
Buckley
Cronin
Cullen
O’Brien
Stringer
O’Gara
D’arcy

Might as well give the likes of Wallace, Earls, Sexton and Healy there chance against Italy, if they go well retain them for France if not there are more experienced players who can slot back in, such Trimble/Horgan on the wing, Darcy, O’Gara and Horan…Although I would start Horan against France if some bit match fit and save Healy for the last half hour as well could well struggle in the scrum against them

No MickO Puke?

How far off fitness is Geordan Murphy I wonder? Started off the season very well with Leicester until that injury.

No Wallace or O’ Leary either. Its a wind up.

very negative (and old irish) thinking there WBY. I’d be hoping for another Slam. Obviously France is the big one, but England are poor, and getting poorer (Hodgson??!! ffs). Wales would be a worry, but at home i’d fancy us. France are capable of anything, but i’d be going there confident.

Definitely should play so. You just looked at WBY’s team and chopped and changed you bluffer. Shaggy would be a huge shock. Earls and Bowe on wings.

here is my “prefered” line up, not actually what i think DK might pick.

Kearney
Bowe
BOD
D’Arcy
Earls
Sexton
O’ Leary
Heaslip
Wallace
Ferris
POC
DOC
Healy
Flannery
Court (worth some game time there, at the highest level)

I’d like to see:
Kearney
Bowe
BOD
Wallace
Trimble
Sexton
Reddan
Heaslip
Wallace
Ferris
POC
DOC
Healy
Flannery
Court

Calls for Shane Horgan to be reinstated as a first choice international wing are absurd in the extreme.

Interesting to see Kev plump for O’Driscoll in the centre.

To be honest I started out writing the team for a bit of divilment however I would start SOB instead of Wally, I’d also go with Sexton ahead of ROG and as a result would give Reddan the nod ahead of TOL to keep the two of them together. While TOL had a good game against Clermont I believe Reddan is in better form.

2 grand slams in 60 years leaves leaves me thinking we won’t be repeating it this year- I’d fucking love to stick it to the French over there though and could see us turn over the English fairly easily so its not impossible just improbable

I wouldn’t let Court near the team Larry, not dynamic enough at all

Shaggy is a legend
Bow down before his greatness you impudent pup

Is there any reason why players are being referred to in non descipt terms here?
