Despite what the unions say, the salaries of bus drivers in the private sector is not what Bus Eireann drivers are worried about. In fact their demands for a pay hike means that people on minimum pay in the private sector end up funding the pay increase through increased taxes.

Complete drivel.

“I would wholeheartedly agree that every citizen has the right to advocate on their own behalf or, in the case of union leaders, on behalf of their members.”

“For the many businesses out there that are operating at the margin, who depend on Bus Éireann to deliver footfall, it will cause some to go out of business altogether and the loss of many jobs. I would argue that nobody has the “right” to do that.”

So he agrees with the right to strike, just not for bus workers! He’d be better off just saying he doesn’t agree with representation for workers.

No it doesn’t

How would the pay rise be funded?

Why are you asking me? Have you read anything about the strike or the issues facing the company?

Through general taxation
Also remember its most likely costing the exchequer money to subsidise the low paid private operator bus drivers with medical cards and social welfare top ups etc to make up for their minimum pay.

What’s your point then?

That what you said was wrong.

This is not about the private bus operator though. Union’s are using this race to the bottom as an excuse to maintain or bump up their worker’s pay. Bus Eireann drivers are overpaid, it’s not the only issue facing Bus Eireann. The issues facing Bus Eireann are the same across all the public secotr/civil service. Lack of efficiencies and accountability as well as inflated salaries.

Flesh out your last comment please? Sounds like lazy cliched analysis

Funny. Michael Noonan was saying last week we need to do more to attract top people to the civil service, ie increase salaries.

Do you base your opinions on any actual facts or evidence or just trot out cliches and perceived wisdom?

Noonan is a cunt and everything he says should be treated as a lie until he proves otherwise.

For Bus Eireann or public sector in genera?l

Bus Eireann

Are we losing top bus drivers to other bus companies?

Insolvency would indicate there are inefficiencies.
No accountability because bus drivers refuse to believe their salaries have any impact on this and are actually looking for a pay rise.

Lolz

In fairness BE have been royally shafted. The private operators have cherry picked a lot of the lucrative routes along with the fact that private operators can walk on top of workers. The govt have to recognise unions and rightfully so, the union executive will always strive to better conditions for their members, so it’s a double whammy for BE.
The only way out is to either give BE back the lucrative routes, subsidise BE or make it a level playing field by forcing private operators to recognise unions. This last point could have been enforced by making union recognition a must for valid tenders, but that didn’t happen. Is the govt a party to the race to the bottom ?
