So, who's striking today? Which Side are You On

So bosses earn about double what train drivers earn - hardly that much of an inequality between frontline staff and senior management?

Fucking hell … over 100k - 88 of the bastards.

That was 2013. I’d say they would have increased the last couple of years.

The cut in subvention has been offset by an increase in revenue. Management are probably incompetent but this is not a reason to give pay rises to staff.

Two questions, how will an increase in public sector/semi state pay impact the cost of living and who is going to fund the pay increase?

I hope to fuck it’s art or music you’re teaching.

He ain’t teaching me

Some thanks for all my years of mentoring.

You never hear me moaning mate.

Yet you justify the moaning of teachers and train drivers.

You spelt menteeing incorrectly

Are you saying people in those professions are not allowed moan? What about nurses, doctors, bus drivers, luas drivers, Gardai, Army personnel, are they allowed moan or not?

Nurses are underpaid and have poor working conditions.

The rest are broadly overpaid and have very generous working conditions relative to other countries and private sector equivalents.

Bus Eireann and Dublin Bus workers are better paid that private sector bus drivers for instance.

Here is the problem the government are sitting back and letting prices rises for essentials like housing and utilities. If they could reduce the costs of this and then it will bring down the cost of living which will make everyone happy. But as long as the government sit on their hands and allow the cost of living to increase then yes there are going to be strikes especially in the public sector.

As for who is going to fund the cost well that is where a competent management team comes in and the cut costs in other non essential areas. Do they also need 88 people in management on over 100K? Then they also need to work with the unions on how to get more bang for their buck but then again on the rails there is not much that can be done, there are only so many trains that can be run because of the capacity of the railway system. Maybe they look at increasing the freight side of the business, I hardly see a freight train anymore.

You do realise that one of the contributing factors to cost of living increases is wage increases, right?

Yeah but you also realise that ever increasing energy prices and banks ripping off customers also contributes to the cost of living. If costs are going up on essentials such as food, utilities, housing, etc, what do you expect workers to do? Sit back and say that’s grand sure I have enough money to cover those increases. Most people are struggling to make ends meet at the moment and all you hear is that there is going to be an increase in Gas, electricity, Petrol prices. Banks then for the laugh charge people in Ireland 2% more than average interest rate in Europe. So tell what do people do? Work for free the Bill Cullen way, that’s really going to put a roof over someones head, food on the table or heat their house.

Train drivers are not working for free. They’re earning above and beyond the average industrial wage and getting much more than their European counterparts.

Grand you solved it, just have everyone in Ireland work for the average industrial wage. Then everyone is happy.

Nope.

I’m saying train drivers are undeserving of a pay rise and are attempting to hold the public to ransom in order to push through a pay rise that is not merited.

If they were underpaid, I wouldn’t have an issue with it but the strike is not sincere.

Train tickets went up 45% during the recession, wages in IE went up 2% and at the same time average industrial wage went down 5% and CPI 3%

You can’t have it both ways

It’s like the 1970s in the UK all over again.
