The major thing is people generally pass through Tipp town on their way to the south east so it’s more visible. No one ever has to pass through Kilmallock thankfully.
Tipp town has been a bleak spot a long time though.

It’s never seemed that bleak to me, I have happy memories of visiting Tipp town in the 80s. My Aunts husband had been born on a pig farm in the Glen of Aherlow and whenever they’d visit from the US we’d take a trip down there, the first hotel I ever stayed in was the Times hotel in Tipp town.
The town itself has comparatively high occupancy rates on the Main Street, it’s beautifully situated,
We’ve often pulled in on our way through and I think it’s fine.
When the kids were younger we seemed to be going through Kilmallock a lot, maybe going to Ballyhouras etc, it seems to have taken a giant leap backwards in the last ten years

The town took a hit when the Delaney brothers (no relation to John) went a bit mad on Paddy’s Day 2009, but outside that the place is the finest.
Some fine pubs in it even if the numbers have dwindled like everywhere else in recent years.
If you go up the hills for a game of pitch and putt you have a spectacular 360 view of the Galtees, Slievenamon, the hills of Hollyford/Cappawhite and the Ballyhouras.
So the best thing about the town is going to the highest point so you can see places miles away and wish you were there instead? Seems about right.

No, you are in the epicentre of a very special area in Ireland.
Its a fine pitch and putt course too with plenty history attached to it.
What year were all the chippers forced to close early to stem violence?
I witnessed some of the most vicious brawls I’ve ever seen in Tipp town in the 00s. One night there must have been 50 or 60 going at it. Another night i got split open by some local cricketer who used my head for practice. Maybe it has changed but it’s a town i never felt safe in… you could feel the violence in the air.
Me and three other lads were standing outside a chipper there one Christmas Eve around a decade ago when, out of nowhere, a local walked up to my mate and punched him in the face.

We all say it casually but what makes a rough town or a kip or a shithole?
Wed never say that town has loads of working class people or council estates or whatever. Or is it more about good quality coffee shops or artisan bakeries?
A mix really. There’s no one thing…
It’s OK to admit Tipp town is one of the roughest towns in the country lads. Makes Thurles look like Westport by comparison.

It’s completely run down. The road itself is always jammers - There’s nothing to pull you into the town itself and make you want to get out of the car and get you cannot avoid it.
There’s never ever a buzz there other than a grim vibe.

Tipp Town reminds me of Mullingar. Mullingar is a fine town.
