Rushe had lost the plot. He’d already taken a swipe at young Shane Bennett over on the sideline, which he had been booked for but could reasonably have been sent off for.
He wouldn’t be the first hurler who couldn’t take his beating.

Eddie Brennan is spot on. Only Maurice Shanahan knows why he spent a few minutes when Waterford were 7 points up in the dying stages jogging alongside Rushe, getting in his face and bizarrely grabbing onto his hurl and refusing to let it go. The game was won, no need for the goading. He came across as a right dickhead but he won’t get special treatment from Kilkenny because they’ll just horse into him anyway.

Was that the incident where the Waterford player wouldn’t give the sliotar back with the game won? I’d agree that he lost the head but I don’t think it happened in a vacuum. There’s bad losing and bad winning too.

Exactly. About 5 minutes before Dublin had a free and shanahan held onto the ball with Rushe holding it as well and shanahan wouldn’t leave the ball go or back off to let him take the free. Shanahan made a tot of himself and deserved a belt, it’s a pity his fuck arseing got its desired result and Rushe snapped.

Living for a while in Waterford city he moved out to Passage East where he bought a small 300 year old cottage, married a local fisherman’s daughter and is now chairperson of the local development association, which has just won the top award in the Waterford Community Forum competition 2011.
He still tries to play football at Junior level for Gaultier in Dunmore East and last year actually came on as a sub for 10 minutes for the Kilkenny senior team in a challenge match in Waterford! He has covered many major stories in every part of the south east. He is married to Louise, and has two children, Isobel (9) and Sam (6).
No, that incident also involved Shanahan. Rushe looked demented and threw a couple of half hearted headbutts there. Then was swinging knees and kicks at Shanahan before swinging the hurl at his head in the sending off. The Dublin hurling championship must be soft enough going if he never came across a lad trying to wind him up before.
