You’re confused between state and country

A country can be part of a state.
Ireland didn’t cease to be a country or nation when we lost our independence. We werent a state. We were a country in the UK
When we won our independence we became a sovereign state and an independent nation
Wales and Scotland are not countries.

Scotland had a vote and decided not to be a country. Wales never had a vote because it wouldn’t be in doubt
They decided not to leave the union. They arent independant but they are a country.
See that @the_man_himself - the Scots decided. They had a vote as Scottish people.
They have their own bank notes, history, culture and language.
