Second was a bullet of a header, didn’t think he had much chance. Not sure how unsighted he was for the first, but he could have got across to it alright.
Believe he lied to everyone else about reasoning for WH not playing. Injury was probably blown up and used to siften the blow to WH. Thats how managers carry on.
I think no matter what he wasn’t playing. But then he says if we fall behind we’ll use him, but he’s not fit to play??? Thats contradictory without any doubt.
And it was just the whole approach. It was a step back i believe, regardless of result.
Hoolahan didn’t train until Wednesday because of his heel injury. That was enough to prove his fitness to start on Thursday. The players were given Friday off to recover and he didn’t train yesterday either. I take O’Neill at face value when he says Hoolahan told him he didn’t feel up to playing 90 minutes back to back. I don’t think it’s unreasonable or contradictory for them to conclude that he could play a part from the bench, especially if we needed a goal as he’s a creative player. I thought Dunphy was being out of order and pretty dumb.
Poor performance, should have been beaten by more. Brady and McClean were especially shit on the left, I’ll give Brady some leeway because he isn’t really a left back but McClean should only be used when the game is more open in the final 20 minutes. McCarthy is a good ball winner but woefully limited on the ball for a guy playing for Everton. McGeady, although an unbelievably frustrating player needs to start as he and Hoolahan are our only players comfortable on the ball in tight areas. If we tried to keep the ball a bit more it would encourage Coleman to get forward more because at the moment we are wasting his valuable talents because he can’t get high up the pitch on the overlap enough
He looks like he knows what a football is when it comes to his feet and that’s good enough for this current Irish team. He did that shit cross near the end and he’s always liable to do that but he also put in the cross that Keogh should have scored which was more than anyone else did
I generally like McGeady, though he is incredibly frustrating. I just think it would be absolutely untenable to start him in a game of this magnitude when he’s barely played any football this season.
I find the difference between our sports farcical really. These soccerball types revert to failing systems, “lack of penetration” types of guff for failures to score goals. Bullshit.
The Eggball crowd will revert to the scutter the panel were on about this evening - phrases such as “double-barrelled” approaches were mentioned…this from “experts”
You’re head would be wasted listening to the panellists at either event.
Wes Hoolahan has played 90 minutes twice all season. The second time was against Germany. The first time was his first game of the season in August which he was obviously well rested for. Before that, the last time he played 90 minutes was against Poland last March. For Ireland.
He has either come off the bench or been substituted in every other game he has featured in. He doesn’t do 90 minutes. And he certainly doesn’t do it twice in a week.
