Roy was badly off form with that one. If youāre going to go down the gender route, cathedrals should be feminised, eg. The Palace might be āThe Grand Old Lady of Fleet Streetā.
The words āalpha maleā have come to signify a person of deep insecurity, of obnoxiousness, of poor values, of charmlessness, of deceit. You donāt want to be going into any pub that epitomises that.
Pubs are supposed to be warm bosoms. If a house was described as āthe Amanda Brunkerās bosom of stout housesā, that would be a place I would want to go.
