It’s all about ceilings. Has this list now reached its ceiling? The Palace was the one we were all waiting for, the centrepiece.

Roy was badly off form with that one. If you’re going to go down the gender route, cathedrals should be feminised, eg. The Palace might be “The Grand Old Lady of Fleet Street”.

The words “alpha male” have come to signify a person of deep insecurity, of obnoxiousness, of poor values, of charmlessness, of deceit. You don’t want to be going into any pub that epitomises that.

Pubs are supposed to be warm bosoms. If a house was described as “the Amanda Brunker’s bosom of stout houses”, that would be a place I would want to go.

He’s getting a bit predictable, isn’t he? Most people would have a fair go at naming 10 of his 12. Is this what he wants to be known as - a mediocre journalist and a first class alco? This list is safe, formulaic, predictable and littered with bad prose - a bit like the rag Roy writes for.
