Weekend away in Athlone.

Not a bad spot at all.

I officially declared Athlone to be the new spot for hipsters last summer

A horrible industrial, inward looking, backwater. In a province that cocks itā€™s arse for John Bull at the tip of a hat.

Hitting Killarney for a family wedding. Extending the stay for a few days there with the full crew.

Any recommendations for restaurants that cater for small kids. Donā€™t need the hassle of going to places with others giving us sideways eyes and smiles as our crew run amuck.

I meant 6 blokes, not a family of 6.

Desperate tragedy in Ballybunion this evening.

We arenā€™t going on any holidays this year so decided last night weā€™d do a big day trip up North. So we did. 12 hours of one in total.

We started off by heading up to Down, driving through the home of the All Ireland club champions (marvelling at the wonderful Mournes en route) and stopped off at some place called Seaforde that the Mrs had wanted to go to. A butterfly house, some turtles, gardens, a maze, a playground and a cafe later we were back in the car heading up towards Strangford. We made the ferry with a minute to spare and took the very short crossing over to Portaferry. We went to the aquarium there, had some lunch, and I lost a pair of sunglasses. A small sacrifice for a good day out. A few hours later, we were back on the road to Bangor, another part of the country completely new to me. Spent a good while here at some kids funpark with those swan things you can go around on, a ā€˜rollercoasterā€™ through some water for kids, and the third playground of the day. Followed it off with a bit of pizza and the drive home via Belfast, clocking up about 250km for the day (which I suppose Iā€™ll have to offset at some stage). Iā€™m cracking up a Red Ale from Treaty Brewery now.

Itā€™s a seriously scenic drive.

Delighted you posted this cause me and me pal go for a road trip at least once or twice a year around the country and we said weā€™d go up around Down and the peninsula. We booked a B&B for one night in Fiddlers Green in Portaferry for ā‚¬74 which isnā€™t bad at all of a Thursday night.

He meant did you give any - surely you let a few roars around Lisburn.

Whatā€™s yer itinerary and mode of transport?

Down is fast becoming one of my favourite counties in the country. Itā€™s got it all.

Planning a week or so up there next month. Probably get an Airbnb in the Newcastle area. Any recommendations for things to do in the area?
