Two bodies were taken out of the Boyne over Christmas too.

Sorry to hear that, pal.

Was down at home this morning. 2 of them on the deaths on the local radio. Tough station for all at this time of year. Youā€™d count your blessings after it.

Thatā€™s horrible, sorry for your trouble.

Iā€™m pissed as well, but thereā€™s beauty in that tale and I wish you and yours well, give that young lad a big hug,heā€™s a legend.

Lack of activity and helicopter parenting and then in turn lazy parenting far bigger issue than the Internet or gadgets

Mixture of everything Kev to be fair.

No. I have huge exposure to this all the time.
Good parenting = respect for gadgets and quality time, nature, exercise etc.

Starts w/leadership.

Kids copy everything.

Absent parenting is a bigger issue than helicopter parenting

Well itā€™s certainly another major factor yes

This is the bones of it really

Thatā€™s a horrible thing @anon98850436. Sorry to hear that.
What is wrong with people ??

Yes. It can be so powerful when people show a good example to kids. As kids will usually out-do anything you have achieved in a good environment.

And thatā€™s generally a good barometer of parenting I would suggest. Your kids end up slightly ahead of you.

Severe unhappiness and depression is part of the human condition and that alone can tip some people over the edge.

The economic system we are part of tips feeds extra unhappiness into the first part and that can tip others over the edge.

Anybody who hasnā€™t thought about suicide, even if only for a brief, unserious moment, is lying.

Depression is part of the modern human condition, and specifically in the industrialized developed world. In third world countries the incidence of depression is a fraction of that observed in the west, and non existent in the few remaining hunter gatherer communities. The incidence of depression in the west is now ten times what it was a few generations ago, all at a time when people are enjoying much better standards of living. So, it has nothing to do with a fundamental human condition, economics, or even genetics for that matter (the rise in levels of depression is simply too fast to be related to genetics).

There are six factors which have led to the dramatic rise in depression levels in developed countries, lack of social support, lack of exercise, lack of sunlight exposure, lack of sleep, lack of social interaction, an unhealthy diet (specifically Omega 6 to Omega 3 fat consumption), and too much time spent ruminating on negative thoughts. The human body simply isnā€™t designed for the modern post-industrial environment we find ourselves in.

Reversing the above trends in our culture is extremely difficult (it can be done at the individual level as people become educated). Itā€™s much easier to prescribe anti-depressants, which can help make life more tolerable, but do nothing to address the underlying factors.
