Summer 2012 Transfer window thread

I did say ferguson rarely made mistakes. Rossi was definitely one of those. I’d say that ferguson probably had doubts about him competing physically in England but he should have been retained.

Forlan spent three years at Utd, got a lot of chances but never really thrived. Ironically if he had stayed for another year he would have had the chance to play with Rooney who would have suited his game far better than Van Nistelrooy who was very selfish.

Ronaldo was there as well though and Forlan may have suffered alongside him.

So Forlan, Pique and Rossi are all players Ferguson made a mistake on but yet he rarely makes mistakes letting young players go. I’m slightly confused.

Robert Zieler is another.

Forlan was given a chance the other two weren’t. None of the trio had shown the ability to force their way into the team prior to their departure.

If I was looking for a mistake by Ferguson I’d go no further than Stam Mac.

We’re discussing young players croppy. I doubt Stam would fit into that. But thanks for reminding me about Stam. Any reminder that your hero Fergie wasn’t a good manager at assessing players ability is always worth raising.

Didn’t Ferguson pass up the opportunities to buy Robben and Essien both before they made it big as well due to penny pinching.

Most likely, but yet he’ll move heaven and earth to outbid rivals for a lazy Bulgarian paying a crazy price in the process.

Meh. Three players that couldn’t force their way into a team that went on to win Champions League finals and Premier League titles.

Pique went on to improve when he returned to Barcelona at the age of 21. There was less competition for a starting berth at Barcelona as a centre half so he game improved immeasurably.

Indeed but Chelsea were offering more in wages than United at the time.

A young Ronaldinho was another who he offered a derisory fee for as well

Didnt he also pass up the chance to sign Joe Hart?

It was nothing to do with wages. Robben held talks with United but they only offered 5 million to PSV or so which was quite rightly bawked at.

But he is very seldom wrong though.

Sure he would have been playing back up to Giggs. No point in paying that much for a player to sit on the bench.

If you’re managing at top level for over 20 years a couple are going to slip through the net one way or the other.

Them’s the breaks.

Giggs was quite average for United between 2004 and 2007. Robben in his second and third season at Chelsea was immense and was one of the best winger in the league at that time

It would say a lot about Ferguson’s abilities if he couldn’t incorporate a talent like Robben into his side.

I was always surprised that Chelsea sold him. I know they got 25 million for him and the allure of Real Madird is hard to resist along with the factr that he was and still is injury prone but his class has always been there to see. who did they replace him with - Malouda was it?
