Roma have been linked with Toby Alderweireld today, I believe he is also on Liverpool’s radar but there are whispers in Italy that a move to Roma is close to being done, Bandage, what are you sources saying in Holland?[/quote]
This is now being discussed by both mainstream Dutch and Italian media as a done deal. Great news, this lad is supposed to be quite good.
He’s a very athletic, physically powerful, ball playing defender. Quite enthused about this one, even though he sometimes has his ‘moments’. I’d compare him to David Luiz, who I think is a smashing player.
MATS is a terrific goalkeeper. The Bundesliga is blessed with an abundance of quality young German goalkeepers from Neuer down and he’s the best prospect out if all of them. Liverpool don’t have a great track record with signing young goalkeepers but couldn’t go wrong with Ter Stegen if he’s interested and affordable.
This is a terribly clichéd and non-interesting thing to say but that really would just sum up everything that’s wrong with football. He’s owned by investors (at least partly) as far as I know so there’s been some speculation that he may not have that much say in where he goes next if he’s sold. But football can’t sustain this model and remain appealing in the long term. There has always been richer clubs and poorer clubs and even seemingly thrifty clubs like Celtic clearly benefit from being able to bully domestic rivals financially. But this was an opportunity that was open to every club. Any club could grow and become the biggest club if they got their structures right, though it may take decades.
For years I’ve heard European soccer fans mock the franchise system in US sports but, while there are obvious problems with that, you can’t argue with the level playing field that exists once you get to that franchise situation.

Surely it is a good thing if more teams are going to compete. Would it really be better if he went to Chelsea or Real Madrid? Don’t get me wrong I would love if teams such as Dortmund won everything but its not realistic unless you have an unbelievable youth setup and scouts
If one of the best players in the world joins a team with no proper supporter base who have been in the second flight of French football for the past couple of seasons then I don’t believe that’s anything to do with sporting competition. That’s just reducing football to a plaything for billionaires, most of whom have very very dodgy backgrounds.
But that was 10 years ago. They’ve spent the past 2 years in Ligue 2. There is no sporting reason why they’d be able to attract someone like Falcao. The only reason they can get him is because of a Russian billionaire owner, not because they were in the CL final 10 years ago. I find that very unappealing as someone who watches the sport.
