Super Bowl LV - The triumphant trail to Tampa (Part 2)

Would 200 yards passing be low for a winning QB in super bowl ?

NFL is probably the only sport where you are left wanting more. Gaa could learn a lot from the season length.

NFL is a great spectacle. There are so many plots and sub plots. That 20 weeks brings incredible drama and feats every Sunday night. It seems to have really captured the imagination of people in this country in last few years. I have been following it a long time but can never remember it been top of sports bulletin before or full page spreads in newspapers here but in truth they are perhaps ill equipped to comment on it. March madness and college basketball will be where its all at now for American sports fans. I saw some highlights of rugby yesterday and it seems to have pailed into insignificance in recent times. It is a really poor spectacle now so maybe the casual Irish sports fan of which there are many who follow rugby are looking at more NFL now. Hopefully there will be packed stadiums again once week 1 rolls around.

No not really. He didn’t need to throw in 2nd half. Had the game been tighter Brady would have probably surpassed 300 yards by end of 3rd Qtr. They were just running down the clock after building up a lead.

It ain’t that low…He didn’t need to throw it for a whole quarter. He threw for over 500 against Philadelphia a few years ago and no one remembers it because they lost.

Was going to make the same point, threw for 500 yards and still lost. He threw for 16 of 20 and 140 yards in the first half, so only made 9 passing attempts in the second half, connecting on 5 for 61 yards. All about clock management once they got the TD in the drive in the third.

Looking at the Chiefs plays, their final four drives of the game were interception, turnover on downs, turnover on downs, interception. Mahomes was 26 for 49 attempts. In fairness to him, he didnt look right in the 4th, his foot injury must be worse than what was being let on.

Michael Irvine post game -he not only did it with the Bucs he built it. All 3 of Brady’s recruitments scored a td last night

Yeah its almost like he is making a statement with each TD throw. If you told me that Evans and Godwin would combine for 3 catches and 40 yards before the game it would have been hard to see a way for Bucs to win.

Brady had an armchair ride …he never had to hit top form …whereas every time the ball was snapped to mahomes he was fighting for his life to get pass away as he had to try make something happen …Kansas never got Brady to that point …
Even when Brady did come up short ,he got a secon bite at it through Kansas stupidity…it really looked so comfortable for Brady .

See thats the difference. Brady can see what a defence is dialling up. He has authority to change plays at last second. He can change protection. Use Fourentte to chip an edge rusher. Use Gronk to do likewise. Change a pass to a run. That’s why he gets an armchair ride because he built the armchair.

but again, thats also missing the point of how they play. Next Gen stats had Brady getting his passes off in the first half at an average of 2.18 seconds per throw, the fastest ever since they started recording those stats (I dont know when they started). So any pressure was non existent then as Brady had the ball out and gone. Mahomes was running backwards and granted, his pocket was shite, but he never stayed in the pocket to get protection to get a pass off. Brady let his line protect him and took the quick pass to keep Kansas on the back foot. Brady makes it look easy because he manufactures it to suit him.

I said before the game that Chiefs would need to use Kelce in pass protection more and sacrifice his production as a receiving threat a bit. They did this for a period in first half but when they started chasing abandoned that strategy. Ultimately that’s why Mahomes was running for his life. They needed a physical back in there too. I don’t know why they didn’t use full back more.

This is a cool graphic showing the difference between them in shotgun plays. Brady just doesnt move out of the pocket. Its one of Mahomes attributes that he can move around and create space and make a huge play by moving and making ridiculous throws. The Bucs flipped that though and made it a weakness. Brady threw 2 “tight window passes” and Mahomes 10. Mahomes was picked twice and only had 1 completion. It was just a stark contrast in play styles, where the more traditional QB stance won out.

Another one on that Next Gen twitter account had a stat that Mahomes ran 497 yards in passing plays. Thats some amount of effort to make a play and has to take a toll.

this is your point here essentially

And what does mahomes style mean to a wide receiver ?does it give them more time to get down field or does it mean they haven’t much room to work with because mahomes takes longer and gets caught so he can only throw to one spot which is easy for defence to read ?

its more free style that the receiver runs his set route, but when it starts to break down, then it is all changed and they just run to suit where Mahomes is and they have to trust both their instincts that a) Mahomes will throw it to where the WR runs and b) that the receiver will run to where Mahomes will throw. When it gets ad lib like that, it makes it harder for completions, but also means it confuses defences and they have chances to get more open. It also looks spectacular and is exciting. But as you could see in Mahomes last night, he was bollixed by the end of that game.

on that point, if you watch Gronks second TD, that became an ad lib play, but not in the manner of a typical Mahomes one. Gronk runs a corner route and is covered, but Brady was looking the other way anyway. But Gronk turns back to the posts and Brady has the ball out of his hand before Gronk makes that cut. Just an instinct with them both that they know where the play will go if the route is not working as designed. I’d like to look at the play from the coaches cam to see how quickly Brady had it gone before Gronk turns.

Mahomes scrambled backwards, sideways, diagonally etc. For 494 yards apparently… That’s some pressure.

Yeah that play from Brady to Gronk for TD was exceptional. You made an interesting point in how quickly Brady had ball gone before Gronk makes a cut. There was a very good camera angle of a completion to Gronk in 3rd quarter which effectively iced the game. Gronk ran a seam route and as he turned around the ball was in his hands and he ran for over 20 yards. The trust to be able to do that is something else. Brady looked frustrated at times with some of his receivers over the year. Even in the win over GB a couple of interceptions could have been broken up by Evans with a bit more situational awareness. It was no surprise then last night that he would go back to Gronk. He even threw a deep ball across his body to him at one stage which could have been another PI against Mathieu.
