Wade departs. Brilliant catch from Bairstow behind the stumps.

Australia are 378 ahead now. They really should be declaring now and getting a burst at England before stumps. There’s a notional 21 overs left today, but stumps is likely to be in 45 minutes at 7.

Burns out 3rd ball

Calamitous start for England. Root out first ball.

Root out 4th ball

Unbelievable Jeff

Hat trick ball coming up.

It’ll all be about poor English batting when Australia have just bowled superbly.

Cummins and Hazelwood have been exceptional all series, both relentless in pressure. They only have a three man pace attack though and the third prong hasn’t been anywhere near as strong. The trick is to wear them down, tire them out. England really only did that second innings at Headingley.

England don’t have batsmen with the aptitude to see off those early bursts from bowlers and wait for things to settle down. Burns has been one of the few English batsmen to acquit himself well this series, but that was a bad dismissal there.

All I saw yesterday were the balls that got root and stokes out. They looked unplayable. Australia could retain the ashes and bizarrely draw the series. They have been by far the better side.
It’s the way it’s gone, almost complete separation of one day and five day sides, and, in truth, even the ashes a damp cold afterthought shoved into the dog days of “summer”.
The aussie side that bestrode world cricket was largely the same 11 in both codes.
The EPL has changed that, apparently irrevocably.

Good first hour for England. 56/2 at drinks. 56 run partnership between the much maligned Denly and Roy.

67/3

Looking pretty grim for England now as Cummins picks up the wicket of Ben Stokes. 78/4

Magnificent sportsmanship by Ben Stokes walking. This Sandpaper crew of Australian cricketers should take note.

166/6 at tea. Australia notionally have 36 overs left to pick up the four wickets they need but may not get 36 overs in if stumps is at 7.

New ball is only 11 overs away though.

Catastrophic misjudgment from Buttler. Leaves one from Hazelwood and it nips in and caches off stumps. 172/7 and Australia are into the tail now with England’s top 7 all gone.

186/8 after 80 overs and the new ball is taken. It’s getting very gloomy. Could do with a light reading soon I’d say if the light continues to deteriorate.

It’s getting very gloomy for England anyway

It’s down to Somerset to save England here now.
