I also think the world would be better off without the Internet.
It was a genuine enough question asking what benefits AI will bring to society. The medical field does seem a good example of where it will do good. I’m struggling to see anything else. I assume there must be other good examples? The downsides are gonna be massive though.
It was argued in the 1990s that the INTERNET would lead to a kinder, gentler, more understanding and reasonable society where facts would matter and people would talk out and resolve their differences in a spirit of mutual understanding and respect.
I’ll let you be the judge of whether that happened.
It would be ludicrous to say that the INTERNET has brought no benefits to humanity but on balance the influence it has had on humanity has been negative and it isn’t close. The same will be true of AI and quite possibly to a much bigger degree than is even the case with the INTERNET.
AI utopianists are the same as true believers in any ideology or idea that proponents believe will “perfect society” (communists, fascists, arch capitalists, “libertarians”, big data, scientific management, cryptocurrency cultists). They’re deluded fuckwits utterly unable to imagine or comprehend any of the unintended consequences it will cause.
Someone get chat gpt to generate a picture of a middle aged neurotic looking fella with a ballwall for a forehead, in a wexford jersey hiding in a bush spying on an athletic man in a dublin jersey walking his dog.
Rage against the machine all ye want lads; it aint going back in the bottle.
Hopefully those using it are level, calm sorts with a rational, inner peace and see it as a way to further their bonds with their fellow man. Just like.you two guys…
It’s a tool. Those who use it smartly within certain fields will be ahead of the pack.
The biggest impact will be to subject matter experts. AI will outsmart these folk and their value will slowly drop. Folk with strong skills in emotional intelligence, agency/decision making, common sense will thrive as AI won’t eat into their value for now at least.
For those with a bit of get up and go and an entrepreneurial mindset it could be very powerful.
Based on available posts from user LionelRitchie on TFK, it appears that he prefers to engage in discussions centered around sports and practical topics. For instance, in a conversation about television packages for watching football matches, he suggested using online streams to access full matches, indicating a focus on practical solutions for sports viewing .TFK
In the specific post you referenced, LionelRitchie stated:
“I’ve better things to do on a day like today than argue the merits of AI.”
This comment suggests that, at least at that moment, he chose not to engage in a debate about AI, possibly due to other priorities or a preference for different topics.
Overall, while it’s clear that LionelRitchie participates actively in discussions on TFK, his contributions seem to lean more towards sports and practical matters rather than philosophical or technological debates.
