Bydgoszcz is also an option Sid. same distance to Poznan as Torun.
Puke knows the score
Off the Ball running a competition on their facebook page for flights and tickets to Euro 2012 (not sure which matches). Basically Johnny Giles is naming his top five Republic of Ireland players of all time on Thursday night and if your choice matches his, you win.
All the clowns on it are naming modern lads the likes of Keane x 2, Irwin, McGrath, Conor Clifford (basically their own top 5 missing the point of the competition) but surely Gilesy is a cert to name at least one or two from his own vintage or before like Charlie Hurley, Jackie Carey or Liam Whelan or some of them. Anyone read his book and know who he particularly has the horn for and what his top five is likely to be? he canāt name himselfā¦
Heard Bydgosczcz is a bit of a shithole. I have an arrangement for basing myself in Torun anyway.
Balbec is there any chance you might be able to tell me what the ballpark figures for the following train routes are?
Torun - Poznan
Torun - Gdansk
Torun - Warsaw
Polish Railways donāt appear to have an online facilty where you can check prices.
As I said Iām thinking of getting a pass which would cover me for 8 days rail travel over one month for ā¬144 but Iām not sure if itās worth it. Iād see myself making 10 individual train journeys within Poland.
Berlin - Poznan is a very reasonable ā¬19 booked online and I think Iāll be one of the many entering Poland via that route.
Incredible that Ken Earley didnāt have the Intergalactico in his top five. He had Damien Duff ahead of him FFS. Duff has had some fine matches in the representative jersey but his performances have been far too few to warrant consideration for the awardā¦
Sid do the following to get prices up.
- go to polrail.com
- click on 2012 timetable
- input your departure and arrival cities and a date and time
- select which train suits you best
- click fare option down bottom of screen in red.
They are very well priced. Gdansk to Poznan is 15 euro odd anyway. Would say Torun to Gdansk/Poznan is around ten euro.
I am reliably informed it is ā¬8
Jackie Carey, Liam Whelan, Roy Keane, Paul McGrath, Liam Brady
Didnāt the breakfast show on Today FM have a competition before where Eamonn Dunphy picked what in his opinion was the greatest Irish XI he had ever seen and he picked Kevin Doyle as one of the strikers
will check tonight. Torun is nicer alright. Berlin is a good call for accomodation too I reckon.
Itās OK mate. I followed Larryās advice and Polish Railways do indeed have a facility to check fares. Just turns out Iām as blind as a bat. Individual fares are definitely the way to go on trains rather than a pass.
Yeah , there is always the chance that the conductor wonāt know what the pass is and you will get into all kinds of shit checking your passport etc. There is first class and 2nd class on the trains too , 2nd is more than adequate. Also for a trip like Torun/Poznan there is probably a local commuter train that is cheaper again that the mainline type of one.
Polish trains seem to be pretty slow, even the express trains. It looks like they stop at most stations. Just for the laugh I had a look at how long it takes to get from Warsaw to Kiev. 18 hours :o
A couple of more questions:
Do trains have smoking carriages and a bar? I think I read that Polish trains are allowed to sell alcohol since last September but that it was banned before that .
Do off licences open late ie can you go in and buy a few cans for a late night train journey? I bloody love drinking on trains.
I can confirm that in August 2005 I was drinking the shit out of it on a train from Warsaw to Krakow.
Fantastic.
FAI confirm Gydnia as Irelandās Euro 2012 base. Itās just outside Gdansk. Sweden had first option on it until draw landed them in Ukraine.
Ah lovely, the benefits of having so many EURO threads in effect here,
I read earlier that apparently UEFA have confirmed thereās nothing stopping us from playing England in Lansdowne Road
Category 1 Italian tickets available on UEFA.
There are alcohol shops open 24 hours in even the smallest village. No problem to stock up. There used to be alcohol on sale on certain trains I think international or inter city ones when I came over. Then they banned alcohol but it is back on sale in trains again. Again not sure if it is all trains but probably on the mainline ones. Best to stock up. The trains are slow ish because some of the routes are a bit cross country on old tracks and might stop in every village. But the intercity and international ones usually go direct. Wwa-Kiev is a massive train journey. There is probably a stop on the border to change the engine. Sometimes the night trains will stop in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night so the driver can have a kip! There is some logic in it too in terms of arriving at 6am you can sleep and get in at a more reasonable time say eight.Especially in the winter.
One other thing, in mid summer the sun is up in the sky at 4am
