Valerie Mulcahy receiving her TG4 Ladies Football All-Star Award in 2013
Nine-time All-Ireland winner Valerie Mulcahy will reveal how she dealt with her sexuality in Donal Ăg Cusackâs documentary to be aired next week.
The Cork footballer has become the first high-profile female GAA star to come out publicly and does so to help others and to make other women, who are in a similar situation, to feel more comfortable with who they are.
Donal Ăg Cusack, the first openly gay GAA sports star, looks at attitudes towards homosexuality at home and abroad in his documentary Coming Out Of The Curvewhich will be aired on Monday night on RTE One.
Mulcahy admits in the documentary: 'When I was younger, I didnât want to be gay."
A preview of the programme on the RTE Guide yesterday said: "Some of the most affecting images in the documentary are of Valerie and her partner kissing and holding hands.
âSimilarly uplifting is the story of young Cork hurler Chris McCarthy, who got in touch with the production during the making of the documentary.â
Munlcahy, a secondary school teacher in Cork city, is one of the most recognisable faces in ladies football and an inspirational figure among the Cork panel.
Last October, Irish hockey player Nikki Symmons went public on her sexuality on RTEâsSecond Captains show.
Does anyone care anymore? Itâs good to have role models for scared and confused youngsters but the whole gay thing has been done to death, society doesnât care if you wanna live with man/woman/rubber doll/Tipp person. Weâre too concerned with ourselves thesedays to care what others do.
Donal Ăg seems to think so, heâs wrangled a tv show out of RTĂ about it.
Trying to fly under the radar choco? Has the princess noticed you wearing her underwear yet?
sheâs a rough looking animal
Definitely must be something in the water in Cork.
Or maybe in Cork we have an open and warm, welcoming society whereas in Tyrone they have to hide in utter depression, go broke and head to London to do some porn.
Ah fuck it, clamped to the hilt.
Ladies footballer gay shock. Not.
No, pal. He left Tyrone because he was caught robbing a county team mateâs house. He likely did the porn to cover the extensive debts he had accumulated or fund his addiction. He brought all his problems on himself.
Cork seems to be disproportionately gay in respect to the rest of the country.

Spoken like a fella who has done real life research on the issue. Just come on out with it for christâs sake.
That doesnât even make sense, mate. Good attempt tho. Keep it up.

Why was he robbing the house in the first place you numpty.
Cork is disproportionately open and honest compared to the rest of Ireland you mean.
Itâs funny though, youâve never been here, your only real interaction with Cork people is on a website. You havenât a clue about what you are talking about. Most foreigners who have travelled Ireland or lived here for any length of time always pick Cork and Galway as the best places they had been to.
And we know how much value the Irish put in what the foreigners think of us.
Seriously though Donal Og needs to knock this âgay and proudâ shit on the head.
Right youâre gay - now get on with your life ffs sake
Never been. Seems to be some amount of gays there though.

"We came over to Ireland and went around different hotels. Dublin, Belfast, Galway and Cork. We worked a lot in Cork. I hated Cork. Theyâre a different breed. Theyâre like the rednecks of Ireland. Theyâre totally not with it when it comes to sex and women. A massive bunch of them would request the strangest of things. One man wanted me to treat him like a little boy. A lot of them were gay but they wouldnât admit it. Theyâre quite dirty in Cork."
Dirty, as in a good way, with dirty sex?
âNo.â She grimaces. âTheyâre not clean, not like city boys. A lot of them reminded me of farmers. Theyâd ask for the weirdest of things. I had a couple of clients from Cork that wanted to be treated like dogs. Theyâd sit there and pant at your feet and lick them. They wanted beating up. Theyâd never have sex, they just wanted you to twat them.â
Did she bring her wooden spoon?
"No. One man wanted me to kick him in his ribs and heâd bring an egg-timer to make sure he got his full half-hour. In Cork, a lot of the men want strap-on dildos up their asses. I see it as not having sex with them so I actually prefer that. Itâs actually quite amusing because Iâd be looking at the back of their head thinking, âYou fucking idiot.â
