TFK Fun Running Thread 2025

Anyone ever have an issue with a time on myrunresults?

My time and a friend of mine who would have started together and finished close enough together are both out by about 5 minites.

I think they’re meant to be fairly responsive if you get in touch.

As exclusively revealed on TFK last weekend, the ā€œnewā€ route is somewhat different to the one they showcased before tickets went on sale. No St Anne’s Park section, as I said, but a few changes before that too. First turn after O’Connell St start at Parnell St rather than Fitzgibbon St so along Summerhill & then up to Croker. When it loops around onto Richmond Road it continues onto Drumcondra Road for the climb rather than Grace Park Road. The original section down Collins Avenue into Killester is replaced by a segment in Beaumont & cutting over into Artane before joining the Howth Road via Brookwood Avenue. Still covering a lot of my running haunts but not as aesthetically pleasing as the original route. Hope there’s a helping wind from the bottom of Watermill Road back along seafront towards town for 4/5km.

Fuck it, not as good but I’m looking forward to it anyway. Training hasn’t been great but I’ll get to the finish line regardless

He’s right you know, but sure I’ll give it a go anyway.

If that cunt reckons 150ft is a mountain, no wonder the country is fucked.

That 2-mile mountain will sort the joggers from the runners, pal.

If he reckons a puff of air from the Irish Sea is a coastal wind he wouldn’t last long on the West

Hi all. I’m looking to do a marathon this year and I will be back in Ireland for a visit in May or June. I’ve a preference for doing one in Ireland with cooler climate.

I’ve looked into securing a place for Belfast or Cork but both are now sold out so I must have left it too late. I see there is a marathon in Kildare in mid May called The Thoroughbread. Have any posters done that and if so would you recommend it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do Limerick at the start of May. You’ll get a great welcome from the forum.

Limerick in May or Waterford at the end of June would be my suggestions Ray. Both will have big enough crowds to drag you around.

The Kildare one will be flatter but likely running through soulless flat plains of nothingness.

@RaymondCrotty had a look at that for you. The 2024 marathon had 117 entries and the 2023 one had 87. The half marathon had a few hundred but you’d be looking at long lonely roads around either the backend of the Curragh racecourse or over around the National Stud.

If you’re looking to punish yourself then it would suit you but I’d sooner take in a city one with more people, bigger crowds and more to see on the route to occupy your mind.

Thanks very much @caulifloweredneanderthal and @Mac. The Limerick one is probably a bit early. I listened to a podcast today that said marathon training plan should be 16 to 20 weeks. That has me thinking I probably need to do it later in the year?! I’ve been running decent mileage to date but winging it with no proper plan. There’s only one marathon here in Cambodia in August but it is very hot then.

Limerick and Belfast are the same day pal. Two months probably isn’t enough time tbh. There’s one up here in June. The Glenmore marathon. It’s all country roads so a few big ups and downs. Wouldn’t be somewhere for a PB but nice scenery and only an hour from the Fingal Riviera.

I would say if you’ve already got a decent base 12 weeks would be plenty of time. Depends on what you’re targeting? Most important thing is to get the long runs in. What’s your longest run so far this year?

18km.

You’d be fine doing 12 week plan I think. Google 12 week marathon plan and find one that suits you. Just need to get out 4 times a week and gradually build the mileage. Do a tempo run each week if you can at a little bit faster than your target marathon pace.

Limerick would be great but possibly too early in May for you.

There’s good events in Kilkee and Killarney but I think they might only have halfs.

There’s a full in Waterford in June but I don’t know much about it.

Waterford would be your best option I think @RaymondCrotty but depends on your travel plans home as its in late June. There’s a bunch of Dublin Marathon training plans that are published from previous years that you could easily follow as others have said. 12 weeks should be plenty to build

Marathon Club Ireland run their own niche marathons too. But it’s like a bring your own beer set up. Just turn up to the designated spot & run a marathon. I see on their website that the next one is in rural Westmeath on Saturday morning! Probably not offering you much help here @RaymondCrotty & Waterford does appear to be the best option for timeline & having a bit of company on the route.
