If he had a team around him like Shefflin or callanan had there wouldnāt even be a conversation about it.
Tis very true when he was at his best he was an unmarkable full forward. Heās the best option at 11 and 14 really.
But Callanan cant play anywhere other than 14 and reid and shefflin have to be there on the same level as joeeen
Canning has been far better since moving out to the half line. As JJ Delaney says he could have learned a thing or two from Callanan about full forward play
Itās the nature of the exercise. Five forward spots pick themselves with a bit of debate on the last for me.
Kyle Hayes > Olie Moran and Niall McCarthy
Will Shefflin be included as a corner forward option?
It has to be playmaking centre forward Richie Hogan for this spot.
Shefflin to corner forward leaving the way open for TK.
Iām not a fan of it for the backs because they still have set positions for the most part but for the forwards with the amount of moving around most top forwards do these days would it be a better idea to just pick 3 for the line? Canning, Reid and Shefflin have all played on the wing plenty
Tony Kelly and Austin Gleeson, one windy fucker and Gleeson a lad who has had one good season and is a lad who hurls for himself.
This is the reason for the debate. Lads being picked on merit in their best positions. Shefflin can be accommodated anywhere as he stood out in all positions. If lads feel Joe is worthy of 11 and Callinan 14 then vote accordingly and Shefflin will find a spot somewhere else. But if people feel Shefflin was the best 11 or 14 then vote for him there.
It is no real different to the backs. I think Paudie Maher would be in consideration as one of the best six backs of this era but unfortunately for him he is most likely the third best wing back too meaning he could well lose out. Them the breaks
Iām inclined to vote for Joe here as I think the optimal line up is Joe at 11 flanked by Henry and TJ with Callinan at 14.
Callanan needs to stop being mentioned in the same breadth as the king and smoking joe. They are on a different level.
Shefflin by a country mile, in his best position.
Johnny Glynn
Hard to what way the forwards will be nominated. There have been three truly great forwards this century - Shefflin, Joe Canning and Eoin Kelly (Tipperary). Shefflin and Canning should both be selected in their best positions of centre forward and full forward. Eoin Kelly in the corner.
After that for the remaining three slots in the forwards, itās much of a muchness. Iād be looking at the merits of a multitude of players - Eoin Larkin, Eddie Brennan, Richie Hogan, Richie Power, TJ Reid, John Mullane, Paul Flynn, Ben OāConnor, Joe Deane, Patrick Horgan, Seamie, John OāDwyer, Lee Chin, Conor McDonald, Rory OāConnor and Conor Whelan.
Eoin Larkin a glaring omission from your list
Damien Hayes should probably be on that list.
He is. Heās on the list now. Just an oversight.
Would you not rate the two other HOTY you left off in Corbett and Shanahan? Do their fallow spells count against them?
Exactly. They both had terrific seasons in 2007 and 2010 when they won HOTY and some other good moments here and there. On the whole I found both to be a bit inconsistent and not to be relied upon.
