Lads, is the vote not the best hurler in the position in the last 20 years as opposed to over the last 20 years? Like, longevity should not come into it because thatās a complete different conversation. Honestly think lads are struggling with comprehending that.
If itās the former, as in the BEST hurler in the position in the past 20 years, then youād want to be a part simpleton to argue that Cian Lynch isnāt a better hurler than David Burke and Brendan Maher. He just is, simple as.
If itās a question of longevity then you can make a serious case for David Burke. But heās just simply not as good a hurler as Lynch. Either is B Maher. That seems to be really upsetting some chaps.
If anything Limerick have been screwed here as Finn missing out to Tyrell is laughable
Well If thatās the case it makes the bizarre hatred of tony kelly by many limerick posters really odd. He had as sensational a year in 2013 as nearly any player Ever. Scooping two all Irelandās and a double player of the year. To be a great you need to do it for a few seasons Imo. Of the current limerick team not many have done it for more than two seasons. There is many more games now which Brings somebody like Cian Lynch into it but if you actually looked at his games at midfield heās probably played 5 very good ones in championship. Has he had more than 10 championship starts there? That shouldnāt really get you onto a team or the last 20 years.
Brendan Maher is better than Paudie Maher. Heās a marvellous hurler. Probably moved positions a little bit too much to be nailed down for a team here but heās Absolutely brilliant.
There are very few hurlers if any (outside of maybe goalies and corner-backs) that have stuck to the one position, and even less so once you get to midfield up.
I think he is. Paudie Maher is a great wing back but was exposed at full back and couldnāt play further up. Brendan Maher could play excellently in several lines. Might not have the showboat catches (but is very good in the air) but has a way better touch and is a better passer. I think paudie is overrated actually. And a diving bastard.
He is. Heās tipps best player of the last decade and heās still playing to an exceptional level. If Cian Lynch and Brendan Maher retired tomorrow there is no possible way Cian Lynch would be remembered as the better player either.
Thatās it. Lads like @the_man_himself love the YouTube hurlers. Brendan Maher is absolutely outstanding. Depending on what happens over the next 3 or 4 seasons he could go down as one of the all time greats.
Brendan Maher burst onto the scene and was excellent. From 2012 to 2018 or so he was good but unspectacular in a variety of positions.
Paudie Maher is Tippās best back since the 60s and by far the most consistently excellent Tipp hurler since he came onto the team. Itās not even a debate.
Kyle Hayes is 21 and has taken Paudie Maher to the cleaners twice in championship. He is very consistent but he is not a true great. Cian Lynch needs to have 3 or 4 more years like 2018 to reach Brendan Maher levels. David Burke is fairly average for me.
Heās the most obvious example yet imo when far poorer hurlers have made the cut, and I think he falls into that top-class in multiple positions bracket.
Deane, Carey and Flynn all hurled for a good portion of the 90s which mitigates against them.
I think Brendan was an excellent wing back when he burst on the scene. Never really felt he excelled at midfield, he was good there but never really dominant. He was a solid centre back under OāShea where he would sit on the d and protect the full back line and I think he has had a lot of games where he had been solid but unspectacular. Injuries probably didnāt help especially the ankle break. He was outstanding this year in a variety of roles and games, his best year since 2009 and 2010.
Paudi has had a good few more stand out performances but probably a few more games where he has struggled too. But he is a more dominant hurler.
Brendan Maher v Gillane last year was the highlight of the championship in the Munster final. Unreal to watch from a birds eye view for 30 or so minutes. B Maher is an incredible hurler.
He was outstanding in 2010 at midfield but never got back to that at midfield. Its complete recency bias to compare him favourably to Paudie Maher as a hurler. Brendan Maher went through 5 or 6 years where he was a good player for the team but not one of the teamās top players. Paudie Maher has been in Tippās best 3 players basically every year since 2010 bar maybe last year
I think it is an optics thing too. Brendan is as clean a hurler as you will find. Tough but honest while Paudie is tough as well I think his swan dives and other carry on and theatrics means that there will be people who will struggle to warm to him.
