TFK International Business Travel Thread

you go for it harvey specterā€¦getting farmed out to spend your best days in the airports of europe is where its atā€¦ it seemsā€¦

I dodged the proverbial bullet this morning. I was due to be the FR112 redeye to Gatwick at 7.40 but after a night of less than 1 hours sleep due to several bathroom visits from an upset stomach I decided at 6am that it would not be satisfactory of me to present myself to my customer in this state so I went back to bed and emailed them to let them know.

Ryanair then decided to land the Gatwick bound flight in Birmingham and bus everyone down to London. Had I gone ahead with the flight I would have missed my intended meeting and wasted a lot of my time before my 5.30pm redeye home this evening.

To being a wuss

as opposed to trying to get a horn from the thought of having to pleasure a female version of Ollie Baker

I have arrived back from Texas:clap:
the merger as i discussed previously is at early days and now we will see a complex legal case more than likely documented over the next 12 months in the WSJ ( Wall Street Journal) as there is a risk of a monolopy being created as a result of this move.
Whilst in Texas i ate out using my AMEX corporate card each evening taking care to stay within the prescribed budget guidelines, i was also careful not to accept any gifts from suppliers that may give arise to any conflict of interest.
Texans are very decent sorts by the way, the dollar a drink deal last Thursday night in most of Austinā€™s bars for the duration of the NCAA football clash between Iowa State University and the University of Texas was fantastic.

The early morning Ryanair UK flights always carry that Birmingham risk. Bristol is particularly bad for being diversions due to fog.

If you ever absolutely have to be in the UK first thing the only real option is to fly over the night before.

Austin Texans are good, however once you get outside the city limits you are in redneck territory.

6th street is magnificent when pedestrianised on a warm Thursday or Friday night. There are 50,000 students in the city with the main university campus only a few blocks away.

Best of luck out there, did you visit Barton Creek mall while you were passing it?

I have yet to be let down on a red eye flight through LCY with Cityjet. Those kunts would land on the set of The Day After Tomorrow. They know thereā€™s masters of the universe on board that absolutely positively have to be there on time. The lack of passport control at LCY and the magnificent DLR to Bank and ergo The City means I can be admonishing investment bankers for being late to my presentations.

Iā€™m battling with something similar, @Mac. Iā€™m meant to be on a red eye tomorrow morning but Iā€™m terribly bunged up in work today and I feel very under the weather. In fact, Iā€™m going to leave work shortly and I hope that some medication followed by a relieving sleep will leave me capable of doing Ireland proud on the European stage tomorrow.

i was out at that mall allright, herself burnt a sizeable hole in the mastercard there last thursday
there is a big outlet mall down I-35S at San Marcos as well on the road to San Antonio, got some grand stuff there in the Puma store
5th/6th streets are deadly allright, if youā€™re into live music its a great spot and there are some decent sports bars as well ( bikinis being one to note :p), and during the UT football games the athmosphere is great. It shuts down at 1am on the dot tho, after that all you have is a few BYOB strip joints outside the city that i had no interest in visiting.

i must say i found the Texans really decent, i had a few days at the end and we travelled down to Bandera outside San Antonio and whilst there is that " redneck" element they are incredibly polite , welcoming and decent people.
My only disappointment was Houston, Christ that place is some mess, you can really see the impact Katrina had on the city in that the homeless population seems to have shifted there from New Orleans, i have never seen so many rundown strip malls containing pawn shops, loan agencies and " loans of the value of your car" type arrangements, we have friends there who genuinely donā€™t feel safe .
Everyone seems to be carrying fking guns, was talking to a few of the local engineers over there ( many ex military BTW) and they go nowhere w/o a weapon, its a mindset i just couldnā€™t get, also last week was the time of the government shutdown, these guys have no time for Obama whatsoever, its all about the dollar there, ā€œi earn money, why the hell should i be forced to pay for some Mexican ( illegal Irish) guyā€™s healthcare when the Veteranā€™s association military clinic is understaffed and he is working 2 jobs and paying no taxā€ā€¦ this is the mindset there , rightly or wrongly they certainly stand by their views.
An interesting point one guy told me is that all obama has done since he entered office has caused division and increased stereotyping, " black/white", " rich/poor", " pro/anti gun", this is worth thinking about really , living abroad we only see the US president really in terms of foreign policy as it effects the world, but domestically the country seems to be in a complete mess and is getting worse now the government has shutdown, if i was living and working in the states and paying tax im not sure id be voting democrat next time out

@mickee321 - I went to Wrestlemania XXV in Houston in 2009 with @Cesc4 and @Dex and I also thought the city was an utter shithole. We strolled past security into a club one night without taking much notice of our surroundings, went to a little bar just inside the entrance and got a round in. We copped that there was 15 or 20 black folk knocking around there but thought no more about it. Anyway, we moved around a corner into the main body of the club and there was literally (not Jamie Redknapp literally) hundreds of other black folk. We were the only white folk in the place but we didnā€™t give a fuck. That said, I thought I was going to get killed any time I went for a piss. Though the only person to draw a gun at me was a cop who took exception when I initially refused to put my drink down as they were clearing the club at closing time. But, yeah, itā€™s an utter kip. I wouldnā€™t like to do International Business there.

You really reckon that Obama has been the one to increase division rather than the extremists who will oppose practically everything he tries to do, including being prepared to shut down the government in order to repeal Medicare which they believe will cause the end of American life as we know it for reasons they donā€™t know why?

agreed on all that
i would like to state on record that that the trip to Houston was self funded recreation and not during company time and i will not be expensing the gas that i used to get to and from my destination via AMEX.
I do know of an oil and gas professional with Exxon who must frequent the place regularly, he does not like it.
The NASA visitor center attached to the Lyndon B Johnson space center is a huge disappointment also, i really hope a hurricane smashes the fuck out of the place soon.

I am not in a position to cast judgement on the American people as i have not paid tax to the IRS or served in their armed forces but there is certainly evidence to suggest that Obama is making life easier for freeloaders, and that fucking disgusts me

Donā€™t let that stop you mickee. I often cast judgement in people to whom Iā€™ve paid no taxes nor served in their armed forces.
