All others were marquee forwards in their forward lines though and were their sides main scoring threat and for the most part exelled at it.
Brennan was excellent and would have stood out in any side in fairness to him, a great man to know when the goal was on and go for the jugular. The other five mentioned would have been excellent in a dominant Kilkenny team with Larkin, Power, Shefflin et al beside them too.
Brennan was inconsistent at the start of his career but did stand out on days when things weren’t going to plan too. Mainly the 2005 semi-final comes to mind, he was unreal that day and the Kilkenny attack didn’t really function tbh.
Yeah, think it was 2004 he was running riot in every game and then didn’t puck a ball in anger in the final against Cork. He developed a harder edge the more experienced he got
He was getting goals before that. He had ten years or so of top performance. The others didn’t have that consistency though Guillane has the years and pace but not the eye for goal. He’s really a converted half forward.
With Jamesie do you give him credit for standing out when he was the main threat and watched, or consider he only stood out as he was in an average forward line?
Look, I obviously really rate Gillane. His ability to win ball inside is better than any of the others imo- he can win it high or low, into the corner or straight down on top of him. The only thing that lets him down is his finishing for goals and I reckon that will come as he matures. Brennan was the ultimate poacher really and that’s why I picked him.
Gillane is pure danger, crucially limerick know how to use him, give him space and hell beat his man and turn, if only he could add a goal shot and maybe he might but now, like a half forward he tilts back and shoots up, need to practice leaning over it and putting his weight on top of the shot like Brennan used to
All 2s + 4s were poor tbf. While he has had clangers, i’ve seen him put his body on the line a few times - a brave player if a bit brainless at times. I dont think he’ll be called into action that many times given my over all D and system.
You’ve made the call now, it’s the type of thing that loses a dressing room but I can think of a few movie speeches that you could give to gee the lads up
Very close this. Both teams with strong HB lines which should win their battles against the opposin HF lines. Strong FF lines likewise against their opposite FB lines.
Midfield might be the key and it comes down there to B Maher against C Galvin. Only one winner there for me. Maher has been a giant this last year particularly. So which FF line is likely to rack up the scores? Gillane & Whelan or Power & Brennan and which HF line can snipe a few scores to back them up? Power v Harnedy .HF line Power more likely than Harnedy I think and FF line - young guns v old timers - is a tough one. Think I’ll go with the young guns just.
Looking at where the differences are, @aristotle has the edge. No contest between Brennan and Gillane for me, Aristotle the better midfield and I prefer Aristotle’s wing backs too.
