The tributes pour in. Terrific to see so many of the old guard from the 1980s back on the screen last night. For the Baron Howe and the Baron Lawson there was obviously that sense of shame over their treacherous roles in her premature downfall lacing their contributions but they were still effusive in their praise. Sir John (who was of course the third of her three Chancellors following the two affore-mentioned gentlemen) was as dignified and thoughtful as ever. Captains of industry, press proprietors and historians all joined forces to pay their own tributes.

Praise came in from abroad. Democrats and Republicans united to lead praise from across the Atlantic. From the far flung outposts of the Empire, the second British woman to become PM, Miss Gillard was effusive in her praise. As far as I can see, the only negative remarks came from France (though in fairness not from Duchy), Eire, Argentina and the Scotland part of the UK– essentially two countries that are wards of the IMF, one that soon will be (if they vote the wrong way next year) and one country that is, well, France.

Rocko, is there an icon out there that signifies trying way too hard to get a rise out of fellow Forumites
Is that not what the rolleyes one is for?
An effusive tribute from Lord Kilclooney
‘Former DUP leader the Rev Ian Paisley lamented the death of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. “In every phase of life she was great – great as a woman, great as a wife, great as a mother, great as a political candidate, great as a Member of Parliament, especially as the first woman prime minister, great as a winner of the war and great as a member of the House of Lords.’

Lord Kilclooney is John Taylor not Ian Paisley
“On behalf of the people of Ulster I brand you a traitor and a liar”
That’s what Paisley thought of the old girl in 1987. Wonder when he changed his mind?
Apologies, posted the wrong one. An equally warm tribute from Lord Kilclooney as that from Lord Bannside.
Mr Taylor, now Lord Kilclooney, described Mrs Thatcher as a great prime minister and world class politician. He talked of how former Taoiseach Garret Fitzgerald “beguiled” Mrs Thatcher who later expressed her regret for supporting the Anglo-Irish agreement they both signed in 1985.
Didn’t Thatcher say that the only reason she signed the Anglo Irish Agreement was because ‘the Americans made her do it’?
The one and probably only area I could criticse the great lady on is in relation to her education policy. Education was the only other cabinet post she held as Education Secretary in Ted Heath’s government. The old jibe about ‘milk snatcher Thatcher’ constantly came up from the left but what hasn’t attracted as much focus is her role in the dismantling of the British education system, with the phasing out of the old grammar schools in favour of the ‘bog standard comprehensives’. The implementation of this socialist type policy fell to Margaret and unfortunately she didn’t stop it. She subsequently made much of her support of grammar schools and tried to blame Shirley Williams (her predecessor in Education) for this fiasco but Margaret must unfortunately surely shoulder some blame.
What are your thoughts on the Hillsborough case, mate?
A very disappointing error from Manuel. Attention seeking must be done in a certain manner and to certain standards.
Its a bit simplistic to completely demonise the woman. I’d have mixed views on her. Her economic policies had much to commend as did her attitude to Europe and the old Soviet Union. Other aspects of her foreign policy, Pinochet and tacit support of Apartheid South Africa were reprehensible. And her attitude to Irish affairs that ‘Northern Ireland is as British as Finchley’ was just too much for any Irish person of even the most moderate nationalist disposition to stomach.
On the whole though, she never craved popularity or sought to curry favour. She was a conviction politician and the world could do with a lot more of those today.
Minnie deserves a follow from all @ the TFK community.
Kevin Myers on Newstalk now defending Thatcher - “the greatest prime minister in history”
Don’t mind that cunt pal.
That’s like an Agri Contractor telling a farmer that the slurry he just spread for him is the best stuff to ever go through the slurry tank.
He just said she was “sexually attractive”
I was just thinking last night that surely Myers would have some “controversial” opinion piece about how great Thatcher was. The greatest Troll of all time
