Euge?? He’s a focking total ledge
Depends on the view you take. What proportion of revenue and what proportion is public? Pretty significant portion is public and would expect that money shouldn’t be used for wining and dining top employees and or clients or for junkets.
Mattie McGrath rambling away now.
Or doing an outside broadcast on a McGrath cup game from Miltown-Malbay on a Saturday night in January
Is that a Liam Lynch badge Mattie is sporting?
Matty going in large on the Boards lack of foodooshery juties
Taking @Little_Lord_Fauntleroy ’s lead & based on his superior judgement, I think it’s imperative TFK remain ahead of the curve (as ever) & pivot to fully supporting the RTÉ executive board. That Sinn Fèin/IRA lass & her faux incredulity at Geraldine O’Leary’s husband being invited to work social events. Fuck off out of that. It’s not in any way unusual for a partner to attend a work dinner or social event.
Go Mattie
Was the event in Japan at the rugby world cup?
A U2 concert in Archbishop Croke Park & a dinner beforehand.
Is this Sherlock one a sister of Sean, the former Labour TD?
Imelda and Brendan Griffin have been the best of them. Malcolm Byrne, Mattie and the rest have been watery enough.
Imelda is a credit to the Louth constituency
This PAC hearings really give these glorified county councillor rooral types the opportunity to make a name for themselves
As someone whose missus used to work in a small company, where partners were invited to the work Christmas party, and forced to make small talk with each other while the rest of them talked about work. I believe this is a practice that should be banned immediately.
€500 or €5k or €50k on wining and dining sponsors could be small change in terms of the value of winning the bidness. This bit is a non story.
Let’s get back to hauling Tubby over the coals and see who else we can drag with him
I’m not underestimating it but I putting forward a perspective.
It isn’t correct to say Kenny failed. He wouldn’t be there if he wasn’t there 10 years on. Newstalk have gone from being hammered in the ratings in every single time slot so now having healthy fractions of RTÉ R1. In the important 15-34 slot their listenership is basically on a par with Radio 1.
Joe Duffy is a different level though- he is still getting 3x to 4x what Sean Moncrieff.
Decent but not what Duffy commands. He’d be a huge coup for Newstalk.
Clearly the amount spent here on client entertainment is (substantially) less than that taken in commercially as revenue.
There is a strong argument that RTE should be wholly publicly funded but as that’s not bthe current model it’s unreasonable to judge its spending as if it was imho.
Most commercial companies will have an element of client spend. You may not like it and it’s clearly something not seen in the civil service but it’s fairly standard stuff really.
As to the level of spend and measuring the return on investment or if it’s appropriate - that’s obviously subjective.
Take your point, but rte is massively public funded and is supposed to have a public service mandate. Equally people who take the view that this is standard stuff have to recognise that this changes the dynamic.
The clear perception here is that this spending was outlandish and it’s hard to see why it’s necessary. Are all these clients going to flee to TV3 if they’re not brought on enough junkets? My strong suspicion is rte is overspending on junkets to the same tune as it’s overspending on “talent”. The fact that all of this is run through secret accounts makes that fairly clear.
