The RTE boys seem to be finally copping on to the futility of criticising the standard of the sport and the way it is being played after and during every game. It might not be great to watch but pundits and the like just have to realise that this is the way the game has evolved tactically and they might as well get used to it and talk about the games themselves and the teams that are playing it on their merits.
They should stick to their guns, Donegal only closed out the game when the attacked at speed and Tyrone opened up Donegal the two times they actually ran at them.
Donegal have clearly developed a devastatingly effective system but the difference between them and Tyrone at their best is that they have almost totally sacrificed individual flair and creativity and an ability to think individually in favour of a relentless adherence to the system. Tyrone enabled individual flair and creativity to flourish within a system. Time and again Tyrone over the last decade Tyrone have, through football intelligence, turned games that were going against them completely in their favour. Donegal have yet to do that.
Sooner or later some team is going to cop on how they attack in waves and hold players back. Donegal just love it when teams throw players forward. Itās their trap. The way they break at speed is reminiscent of Royal Madrid and Iād bet anything McGuinness has showed his players videos of them. Tyrone couldnāt deal with it today but were still just a kick of the ball away from winning. Hard to see Down having near enough in the final although one thing in their favour is the speed with which they can work the ball in attack. Thatās an absolute necessity against Donegal.
Sure the whole game plan of both teams is to defend in numbers, then attack at speed by running at teams and breaking tackles? Thatās why they spend all that time on gym work and fitness.
Donegal remind me of Spain and Barcelona all right.
I donāt think thereās much point playing a full forward line against Donegal. Mulligan and OāNeill were worthless for virtually the entire game. Drag three men back, play a 3-4-4-3 formation, control the middle, make it way harder for them to break at pace and make it easier for your own players to make runs from deep and find space.
Of course you could always put a big man in the square. Dan Gordon would do the job nicely for Down.
