Have you read friday night lights bro? the real soul of the game is high school then college, no one doubts the razzmatazz of the NFL isn’t overwhelming. however suggesting that it’s worse than skys super sunday hype etc is wrong. the skillset might not seem too large, and in truth its just pure athleticism at times rather than a technically skilled sport, but like all sports the more you understand the more you appreciate. and it is played by i think some of the most freakishly gifted athletes in the world, at huge risk of injury. that risk of injury means the games days are numbered, too many brain injuries
Yes, I’ve read the book and seen every episode of the television series. I don’t doubt high school US football is taken deadly seriously by those involved and by the local people in these places, but nobody in Europe gives a toss about it, and I doubt many people outside the areas involved, or at the very most the relevant state, care too much about it either.
NFL hype is definitely bigger than Premier League hype.
Funny thread. surprised it took so long for it to get a thread of its own, but humorous all the same. some very good arguments against it alright. havent really seen much, but I’m sure there are. The usual shit gets thrown out and for some reason then everyone starting wanking over “cerebral”. for some fucking odd reason.
Anyway, the whole “you dont live there, you shouldnt watch it” reminds me of the same shit that the arrogant pompous hurling fans from more “traditional” stronger counties would say to weaker counties like Limerick or something. who gives a fuck where you are from, you can appreciate any sport if you know enough about it to take enjoyment from it.
The bandwagon is real, even on here it’s apparent in small doses, but in fairness to the majority who follow it on here, this has been going since well before the real hype from sky and the London games started. I dont need to justify my or anyone elses following of a sport by determining that many Irish fans started y watching it on Network 2 after the Serie A show on a Monday night, or else on a Saturday morning on Channel 4. there is no doubt there is a sky bandwagon element to people watching it. but sure what fucking harm, as long as they dont get in your face and start going on about dockers and salt of the earth men, its hardly the worst bandwagon going.
Just a couple of points on Sids essays. Its funny how he he says he cant think of any other sports that has offsides, considering the sport we are talking about actually has an offside rule in it. Although in fairness to the novelist, this could be another attempt at “baiting” seeing as his multiple attempts of noting that there have been no other big sporting comebacks in 2017 wasnt picked up on by anyone after the Barcelona game. it was thrown out there, but unfortunately no one bit at it.
Also, the ridiculous size argument of a player is odd. Apart form Messi being bigger than 5ft5, its not as if soccer has some sort of hold on being the only sport that will play small players. In the NFL, you have players like Wes Welker, Darren Sproles, Maurice Jones Drew, Ray Rice, Andrew Hawkiins, Taylor Gabriel, Tyrian Mathieu all 5ft 8 or under. There have been plenty of small fast players in NFL. And on the flip side, whilst Marronandwhite tried point out, whilst most sports will only take elite slim athletes, at least NFL opens an opportunity for the more rotund and larger player to be able to play. imagine, if American Football was played more in Ireland then maybe more on TFK would have actually played a sport.
And following that, it is played here, and some on here have actually partaken in it with some of the regional teams that are dotted around the country. It may be shit, but sure at least its something.
There are actually far more intricacies involved in the game that the roaster wont get from 2 seconds viewing and shouting thats shit. I’d agree, the vast majority of the skill and instinct is on the quarterback. they have mere seconds, sometimes less than 2 seconds to evaluate the players running at them to take them down, to see which of the 4 or 5 receivers are on their correct route, then which ones are not covered and are open and make a throw that only that receiver can get. Yeah they have plays they learn and practice, but its still instinct. And dont tell me that the catches made by Edelman and Jones in the Superbowl were not instinctive and extremely athletic and of the highest quality to make. thats just 2 examples. you can make an argument for every position. its easy to see the linemen crash into each other and roar “look at the fat lads running into each other”. actually watch the play, see what their movement is, what their job is, who are they to pick up, did they make the right spin move etc.
Anyway, its humorous to see. Unfortunately I wont be getting bogged down in it and really coudnt give a shit if lads dont like it. their loss. I might pop over onto the anti rugby thread and send a bat signal out to Dan to defend his sport with honour again, the deflection of it to this thread probably only lasted up until about 9.45pm this evening. Or maybe I wont because I dont really give a shit either.
You sound like a weirdo
Fair play to the thread starter, I never had him pegged as having the brain power for a 144 post troll. Kudos.
So because you grew up playing one sport you can’t appreciate any other sport? Says a lot more about you than us, mate.
I’m just taking a dump here after a load of prunes for breakfast… I’m in a glass see through cubical and the smell is horrific. The chillies I had last night are causing a mild irritation on my ring .
Bullet points.
I look like one too
Your won’t be getting bogged down in it? You just wrote a thesis mate
You would want to be bored to watch the American Football
What I meant was I won’t argue incessantly for months and months every time, years even, someone has a pop at something to do with how shit someone thinks the sport is. Or try deflect to other sports and keep bringing up irrelevant points to the sport that really has nothing to do with whether people think it’s shit or not.
its black or white, there’s no inbetween here
One thing, can you name names when you say there’s posters here who’ve played competitive gridiron in the Irish regional leagues?
you always go for the inbetween
Yes.
Go on.
