The Anti Rugby Football Thread Pt 2

Yeah absolutely. Are you suggesting that the GGA cannot attract in people to play without this grant?

What do ye do with all the sterling we spend in Clones each summer?

also the cost to society of the drunks in the clubhouses

weird how the gahliban play the orange card when it suits them

Apparently they need to bribe people to play it.

No Iā€™m suggesting itā€™s right and proper that they get this grant in the same way that artists and writers get financial assistance from the State. All are woven into the social and cultural fabric of the nation.

A leitrim hurler deserves 4k from the state?

Why? They donā€™t bring any money into this state. They are hobbyists, the comparison to artists is risible.

According to this the grants are now worth ā‚¬6m per annum.

So 5,000 players are getting paid to pursue a hobby?

Something that was more popular when they werenā€™t getting paid?

Is there anyone in the GGA not getting paid?

Probably deserves a lot more in fairness for the sacrifices they make to contribute to the cultural fabric of the state.

Is that what theyā€™re getting now?

Holy God.

Strange how so many cultural things in this state donā€™t need to be bribed to participate.

i run the most successful Comhaltas in Oireland

I should be getting ā‚¬ā‚¬ā‚¬ā‚¬ for this

Donā€™t be silly. The comparison to artists is perfectly valid. Both are contributing handsomely to the cultural landscape, just in different ways.

Economic activity can be generated by popular events that appeal solely to Irish people as well as activity brought about by visitors. So thatā€™s another nothing point.

6 million is nothing compared to the income tax and vat generated on matchdays. Itā€™s a tiny price to pay to compensate the people who preserve something so uniquely Irish.

I perform a very valuable service to the GAA and I donā€™t get paid. Iā€™m happy to do it.

Mad that. And to think the GGA has a large commercial operation that could pay the grants to these players if they really did need to bribe problem to participate.

Itā€™s not strange at all. Itā€™s perfectly common the world over.

lets be honest, they pay that money so that GGA players can pretend to be sportsman

Artists do it for a living.

GGA hobbyists do it like someone playing darts or going for a swim.

None of that money is inward investment. The GGA have completely failed to commercialise their product beyond the borders here.

In fact when you go abroad youā€™ll see more influence of Irish people spreading football or rugby than the GGA.

Youā€™ve said that interest would collapse without this grant. If thatā€™s the case then the GGA really is in a terrible state.

Think about the multiplier impact that funding for hockey and cricket has had for Ireland.

Or even a sport like Basketball. A sports getting less than ā‚¬1m a year despite the participation levels, particularly among females.

They canā€™t fund new facilities yet the Irish state are paying GGA players money to go boozing in Ibiza when they get knocked out of the Championship.

Sure you have to accept the sterling sent south or the money coming from London for GAA infrastructure like Casement as inward investment, you canā€™t have your bread buttered both sides.

CJ O Stander took it out of the state though, and away to SA.
