Imagine being so insecure about rugby that you would crowd watch the Late Late, let alone tune in.
There’s a real strain of insecurity about the rugby haters. Is it because all of the plump soccer fans hear their partners say how lovely Conor Murray is?
Schmidt had won two European Cups and Two Six Nations, as well as a couple of other trophies, in the 5 years up to then.
Do you think Jack Charlton would have got a negative reception after failing to qualify for Euro ‘96?
What interesting in all these claims of “double standards” is the just general ignorance.
How was Eddie O’Sullivan treated in the aftermath of the 2007 World Cup? Iirc, he was asked whether he would resign in the post match interview, was derided in the media and then forced from the job a few months later.
Unfair as that was, the reason was that O’Sullivan had not delivered what Schmidt had and there was significant criticisms of his approach coming out of the squad.
What was Ewan’s reaction to Leinster being called Ladyboys for all those years?
Yeah that would be weird.
I think you missed the point though…I didn’t “crowd watch” because of some sort of insecurity It was a comment I heard this morning and I found it an interesting / funny / weird. I had thought the overwhelming feeling after the last Rugby WC was that the team failed yet again. So for a small sample of Irish people (e.g. a LLS audience) to feel this warranted a standing ovation…well…it just didn’t make sense to me.
This of course after weeks of media speculation and questioning. Apparently Irish rugby doesn’t get difficult questions though?
It’s funny how Ewan will go mental at a place like this over some personal shite, but will happily indulge in baseless insinuations on Twitter. If he wants to be a proper journalist then go out and work the story. Not only is he a journalist incapable of doing his job, but a hypocrite to boot.
As I said, what do you think the reaction would have been to Jack Charlton?
Eddie O’Suillivan got a cold atmosphere after his 07 WC, rightly or wrongly.
Overall, Schmidt was still an outstanding success at that point. Losing a game after the spine of your team is injured doesn’t turn you into the devil in most people’s books.
They had their key men all lined out for the finals.
Carter, McCaw, Read, Moody, Ratalick, Smith.
Ireland lost O’Connell, Sexton, O’Mahoney, Payne as well as no O’Brien.
These things happen, you lose players in sport.
It’s was seen as an upset at the time, much like say Italy v Ireland at Euro 2016. The difference was though that those were enforced absences, Italy simply rotated to their second team when playing Ireland in 2016.
Ireland apparently play a very attritional, physical game and invite collisions. Big boys running straight for the most part rather than trying to swerve and find gaps. This naturally increases the likelihood of injuries occurring, at least relative to the opposition anyway.
Your deflecting is great — your man lays out a game plan that invites injury more than others … he failed to prepare or adapt his game to the challenge he was facing… that’s a failure on his part.
