I used to be hugely interested in this, but got very bored with it years ago. I go along with the Donald Sutherland character in JFK - all the assassination stuff and conspiracy theories are just parlour games designed to keep people’s attention diverted from the real question - Why?
Why was he killed? Who gives a shit by whom and by what means, half his head was missing, the question is why?
Personally I think it was the Vietnam war and the money it would make for the millitary-industrial complex. The US has a great way of supporting it’s defence industry by inventing wars for no reason and then spending squillions on them, employing american workers along the way and making a number of people very, very rich (see Iraq war, 2003 - whenever, also Cheney, Dick).
LBJ accomplished a great many great things as President. But I always wonder what part he played in this.
For what it’s worth, years ago I came to the following conclusion vis a vis the actual assassination - LHO had absolutely nothing to do with it and never pulled a trigger until he killed Officer Tippett. He was a CIA mole infiltrating commie groups. His background was intelligence and by all accounts he couldn’t hit a barn door from 5 paces with a semi automatic rifle, never mind a moving target a couple of hundred metres away with a very old Italian bolt action rifle.
No, Kennedy was shot by a number of gunmen, in a number of positions, working for a number of disparate groups. No one on Deeley Plaza was more surprised than each of them when they realised they weren’t the only gunman. Each were probably quite pissed off that they couldn’t be certain they were the one that killed Kennedy. Each of them died in unfortunate accidents months later.
But, parlour games. Does it really matter? To us no. To the millions of Vietnamese and Cambodian people who subsequently died, yes, it probably should, but they’re too busy dealing with landmines and babies born every year with deformities from Agent Orange and napalm and uranium tipped shells and all the other innovations the American defence industry and their workers, or workers votes have come up with (fuck off with your 55000 American soldiers killed, I’m also very bored with Americans going on about the sacrifice they’ve made in reaping death and destruction on innocent people).

Agreed. They put in just enough troops in Vietnam so they wouldn’t advance that far north but wouldn’t be pushed too far south. Kennedy wanted to end the charade. They prolong wars for as long as possible because there is too much money to be made.

Interesting the reporting and timing of this. We’ll take the hit on the lesser charge of sex allegations but hopefully this takes away the spotlight from the fact that he cant remember where he was at time of assassination (he was in Dallas) and the fact that Hoover referred to him as heading up CIA operations in 1963 and not 1973 as Bush himself claimed. Bush retorted that it must have been a different George Bush in response to that.
