The Battle for Liam 09

They were both red cards.

Thats as bad as I’v seen Tipp there in a couple of years Today. Rubbish.

Still too early to tell. Is he going to end up being a nearly man?

Time to get rid of sheedy?

Another special word for Timmy Macs commentary - the man is a legend. Give the man more exposure, at least he sounds genuinely excited.

Ned: Well, I guess this is a case where we’ll have to agree to disagree.
Skinner: I don’t agree to that.
Edna: Neither do I!

Can we get him to replace Ger with immediate effect?

Count it!

Maybe they are going to peak in August this year because that was muck. Noel McGrath excepted.

That kid is special.

Scoring 2-9 as he regularly does does not constitute a ‘nearly man’.

What he does, or does not do, in future is irrelevant at this stage. At the moment there is not a finer hurler in Ireland.

He needs to be a leader [tough for one so young] and actually drag his team over the line. The two big games he has played he has scored well and lost twice.

2-9, just a goal from play and held for most of the game by a former HOTY.

You could argue for a half a dozen others including his marker yesterday.

What?

Again - what?

Jesus Christ did it ever dawn on you that by scoring well he is being a leader? The reason that they lost both matches was not down to Canning’s lack of leadership. His heroic performances have gotten them within striking distances of matches, without which they wouldn’t have gotten within an ass’ roar of Cork/Kilkenny.

Talk about begrudgery. Yeah he has scored 2-9 and 2-12 but really he should be beating the likes of Kilkenny and Cork by himself.

Ridiculous.

I agree with Farmer on this one.

Tipp cant finish teams off. Clare shouldn’t have been anywhere near them after the first 20 minutes. Some very good hurlers but they’ll not win the AI this year.

I would have to disagree with farmer here…thought Canning was good enough yesterday but not that good. Larkin was the best player on the pitch yesterday and is still only 24.

Fair enough if you think that TT. Like I said Larkin is a fantastic hurler as well.

But to say that Canning doesn’t show enough leadership is ridiculous.

He did the business for the club there last year anyway. Personally I think the whole “leadership” thing is over hyped. You know, if a fellah smashes up a dressing room at half time and they win, then it was great leadership and what not but if they lose then there was an almighty row at half time and so and so lost his head.

Yea this is definitely a different version.

You were asking about the nearly man comment.

Eoin Kelly[Tipp] would be a appropriate comparision as he has been burdened with carrying Tipp on his own for many years and has seemed to have grown weary from it. Eoin Kelly may very well have been the best player in Ireland several years ago but he pales in comparison to others these days.

I agree, Canning obviously needs help but winning is what makes you a legend, not scoring heavily and losing. Canning needs to win matches and play in AI finals to be considered the greatest player in the country.

It is no conincidence that the Hurler of the Year in the last 14, 12 times has come from the AI Champions.

The Cork game was much more impressive than the Kilkenny game in my opinion due to his contribution from play.

To think that a team heralded as the greatest team ever in some quarters would not contain the best hurler at that time merits discussion. Joe Canning is well up the top of the list but declaring him the greatest hurler in Ireland is not cast iron.
