Baker from 97 to 99 was the best midfielder in the country routinely lording games for Clare and Barefield where he would physically dominate and hurl a world of quality ball. He was far from a mullocker and his skill level was night and day compared to the player he was in 1995.

Injuries and his propensity for putting on weight meant his mobility left him and by the end of his career he wasn’t anywhere near as effective but at his best he was a dominant midfielder in a similar mould to Fennelly who also developed into colossus after looking short of some of the attributes necessary earlier in his career.

Bangers was definitely a mullocker but as honest as the day is long. Very effective as long as you didn’t need him to strike the ball.

Will O’Donoghue is a modern version really, unbelievably effective at what he does.

I did always like Seamus Prendergast, some man to win ball. Timmy McCarthy was a great bit of stuff too.

After watching Clare v Offaly 1998 on Eirsport yesterday Ger Oakley from Offaly springs to mind. Not sure if he was a mullocker or just a shit hurler.

I’d have considered Niall the more of a mullocker, Timmy was like PJ O’Connell just a pure whippet who had a great engine but lacked a bit of wristiness.

Niall was much more of an ignorant hurler in the better sense of the word
