Modern game does not facilitate an orthodox full forward line. If you do, you surrender the middle third to the opposition. They will literally have too many bodies for you to get any sort of decent possession.
Its akin to playing 2 in midfield vs 3 in football. The three will largely control the game.
I said nothing about âan orthodox full forward lineâ.
Any sensible coach/manager knows you have to disrupt the oppositionâs preferred way of playing. The logical corollary, when an opponent likes to flood midfield, is to make this aim more difficult. A direct way of achieving this end? Forcing them to keep more men at the back than they intended. An indirect way? Keep their men further away from each other. The âflooded middle third/antelopes in a heapâ emphasis is plinthed on having âsupport runnersâ near where a teammate picks up possession in tight circumstance.
John Donnelly on Robert Downey would be a highly interesting move next Sunday.
âDreamlandâ⌠Better, I guess, than the horrors of Fitzgerald/Cusack/McGrath land.
Ye are remarkably touchy.

To your point. Hard to tell from watching on TV, but it looked like Tipp tried to do this against Waterford. However, you just wont compete and gain enough possession unless you have the personel (as you said) that have the required attributes (which Tipp did not).
Ultimately, systems aside you need the personnel that are athletic, skillful, fast, hardworking and can execute under pressure.
I suspect Kilkenny have an edge on us here and as you said Limerick are a level above that.
Clare did a decent job incorporating Aaron Shanagher as an orthodox full forward come corner forward often in a two or one man full forward line. His shooting left a few teams off the hook but he won an amount of ball alternating between the large rectangle and attacking the space out towards the right corner for direct deliveries.
But by the same token it takes an awful lot to play such a role. The chap looked like he was running on empty from the start v Cork playing that role for the 4th time in 5 weeks. Shipped a lot of punishment in both league and championship.
I do think there is still a place for a proper full forward who stays in and fairly close to goal but they need to be really mobile and I donât think its the kind of thing you can change to mid championship these days
I agree with @Johnbird assertion. He should be edge off the square. His strength and fielding capabilities would be better utilised there. A great option for more direct ball.
