The Cancer Thread

Condolences. I was chatting to an uncle lzst weekend who lost his wife to cancer. Tumour in the brain iirc. He said if he got cancer he’d say fcuk it and not bother with the treatment. Am guessing it’s bravado, hopefully he won’t have that decision to make but he said it was torture watching her go through all the operations and chemo etc.

That age group man, they’re nuts really. I’d like to think our own generation would make a point of fighting it, jays I dunno…

There’s ones where you’ve a good chance of beating it and others with no chance unfortunately

Nuala O’Faoláin had the right idea. Marian Finucane had the right idea even more. When you have to go, go quickly.

The man farming beside me has it. His two sons are abroad. It’s a fair tough thing for anybody to deal with. It is getting all too common now as well.

A great read. “Enjoy the tiny ways you can make other people a lot happier” really struck a chord.

Called down to Cork to visit last Thursday as I knew it was probably the last chance. She gave it everything, even going over to London for a drug trial, but she was absolutely riddled with the cunting thing. Felt for the mother looking on at her ‘little sister’ pretty much drifting in and out of consciousness. Too weak to move to the hospice so they took on her care in the hospital. I stayed for a few hours and we had a few moments of eye contact and she tried to speak but didn’t have the strength. Later that evening, she briefly asked where I’d gone. She never spoke again and passed away last night. A month shy of being 66. Stay away from the smokes lads.

So sorry for your loss chief :pensive:. Like you said, stay off the smokes. Mrs Lockes father passed away ten years ago due to cancer from smoking, same age as your dear aunt. No age.
The facts are stark - if you smoke you have a 1/2 chance of getting cancer.

Not just older Irish houses, but all Irish houses. As well as having poorly installed radon barriers, newer houses can also be quite airtight and lacking in proper mechanical ventilation. As a result, radon levels can be dangerously high in homes at certain times of year. It’s worth checking out the EPA’s radon risk map to see how likely you are to have a radon problem.

In my experience, radon levels are highest over the winter months (increased soil moisture increases soil gas radon concentrations), so it is worth testing your home around those months. A radon testing kit is cheap and will give you an understanding of whether or not you have an issue.
