I’m clearly wasting my time trying to discuss this properly with somebody whose insularity won’t allow him to recognise the achievements of anybody not born in Italy or Ulster.
Time will prove who is right here, Poch’s stock is much much higher than Conte’s, if the roles were reversed the two teams wouldn’t be in the same sentence.

Breathtaking double standards - Italy are four times World Cup winners and one of the superpowers of World Football. Elimination in the quarter final is failure for Italy. Contrast that to the standard you hold Lionel Messi to, even in reaching a World Cup Final or how you dismiss Pochettino as a managerial failure.

Italy knocked out the European Championship holders and beat the Belgian side who were then the no. 1.ranked side in the world at the Euros. They then lost to the World Cup Champions via a method you refer to as a “lottery system”. You’re the one with the double standards. Italy had exited the previous international tournament in the group stage so he did build on what he took over, whichever way you want to look at it.

Plenty of clapping on the back and frantic explainations for failure. Going into the 2016 European Championships, Italy had never lost to the Germans in all eight previous meetings at World Cups and European Championships. Italy had won all four knock out meetings as well in 1970, 1982, 2006 and 2012.

I thought he did a great job with Italy. We brought the World Champions all the way to a penalty shootout, he knocked the reigning European Champions out. We had lost nearly all our established midfield options before the tournament with Pirlo retiring, Marchisio, Verratti and Montolivo missing out with injury and then De Rossi and Motta missing the Germany game through injury and suspension respectively.

Fine margins and it’s a shame he could not continue his work as the national team has worsened since despite having better players available.

Here’s an example of lost perspective. In 2015/16, Tottenahm had their best league season in 26 years, finishing 3rd. In 2016/17, Tottenham had their best league season since winning the double 58 previously in 1960/61, finishing 2nd behind a Chelsea side who set a record for most league wins in a season. All of this occurred with Spurs having only the 6th highest payroll in the EPL and punching well above their weight. This was your perspective on Spurs 2016/17 season.

Staying on topic would require you to qualify your comments on Conte setting teams back by 5 years.

Spurs budget is not in the haypenny place. If every club took that outlook we could leave Barca, Real, PSG, City and Man Utd off with it but it’s not an excuse.
