The Daily Debate - Day 3 - Dan Shanahan v Lar Corbett

Both had a very similar career arc. Both burst onto the scene as 20 years olds before having five years of struggling for form/fitness and lost their place in their respective sides before being reborn and putting together a three or four year spell where they were the fulcrum of their side. Both won three All stars and Hurler of the year at their peak but were very different hurlers.

There are a few ways this can be approached, who was more important to their team, who was the better all round hurler, who was more entertaining to watch, who would you rather go for a pint with etc etc?

Lets settle it, Dan the Man or Lar Corbett?

  • Dan Shanahan
  • Lar Corbett

Lar all day every day for me. Dan was unreal for a year, but then he got none and we got 5.

Lar was an excellent hurler.

Dan seems to be a bit a clown as well, Lar seems sound

Lar all day.

My aporoach would be I’m going to vote for Dan on the basis that I couldn’t possibly vote for a Tipp cunt for anything.

Larry.

I liked both and both at their peak were phenomenal albeit their peaks were probably about four or five years. Lar will get my vote and will probably get it on recency bias especially as the 2014 replay was on yesterday which might sway a few but Dan deserves a bit of love too, for a big bull of a man he could hurl and used to terrorise an excellent Cork half backline like no other at the time. His ability to get goals between 2004 and 2007 was unbelievable.

Lar was just the on-field embodiment of Eamon O’Shea’s style of hurling, all clever movement and slick touches. A very classy hurler while Dan was more of a throw back. Too right characters. Lar just about shades it for me.

Not a fair comparison at all imo. 2 completely different types of player.

I’d have said a fair comparison for Dan were players like,
Martin Comerford or Niall McCarthy.

I wouldn’t even bother try annoy or wind up people here. Lar with a good bit to spare.

Are we talking in terms of personality here?

Cos of its hurling there is no debate

Dan Shanahan was a much better scorer than either of those in his prime. He was unmarkable for a time as a scoring threat. Still, its Lar for me

Comerford was every bit as good of not better than Dan.

Dan had probably 2 great years max.

He was in his hole

Mullane vs. Lar is probably a better comparison mind you

2 completely different players. Dan for me on the basis he’d be better craic to go for a pint with I’d say.

I don’t know man. Lar Corbetts bar seems to be a serious den of iniquity, Dan Shanahan wears a baseball cap backwards on his head.

Dan the man for me.

Some things have to be said

Dont forget Lar could play the game both ways, he kept tommy walsh scoreless in the '12 semi final.

Dan is far more like able but all round Lar was far better hurler imo. Chip were going well in Nowlan Park in 2013 until he went off and with it the wheels which showed his importance. He also played really well in 09 final

I don’t think he drinks mate
