The depression thread

It is costing me 5,000 euro extra for mortgage protection (over the life of the mortgage) solely because I have this illness.

Wtf?

Thats depressing

I’d be worried I’d void the insurance as it pretty makes up my entire medical history

You can’t do that.

You would.

Why not. Tell them you’re better now. How many people answer honestly about how many units of alcohol they drink a week?
That 5 grand would buy bati a sun holiday a year for 5 years. Thatd do wonders for his depression.

That should be illegal. The public message is that we should talk about our depression andseek help. Meanwhile insurance companies can fleece you. And I’m sure there’s a clause in there that means they don’t have to pay in the event that someone tries to self harm

I am familiar with a family who were refused an insurance payout when the father died of cirrhosis of the liver. The insurance company concluded (not unreasonably) that the insured had been economical with the truth when answering the alcohol question.

If I was out of work for a long spell of time, which unfortunately has happened to me on a few occasions, it would affect my income.

I would wonder what other illnesses add a premium like this?

Colitis, haemochromatosis for a start.

It’s either an illness or it’s not. If I had cancer or heart disease wouldn’t it be the same deal.

True. It’s not that much over the life of the mortgage it’s just, well, depressing I guess.

I have / had a medical issue. I was not aware of the issue when I applied for life insurance a number of years ago.

I subsequently needed a new policy. I disclosed the newly discovered medical condition and submitted doctors letters etc. In one of my discussions with my doctor he noted something along the lines of me being a terrible runner since childhood. Insurance company refused to cover me on a new policy and pulled the existing cover. They’re absolute pricks.

Now have to disclose that I have had cover refused every time I go for any sort of policy. The only thing I can take from it all is to not die young if at all possible.
