Who says Judge Nolan is soft on crime….

A sad end

Judge Nolan has sentenced DJ Carey to five and a half years in jail.

He sentenced him to four years on one count, and 18 months on another count, amounting to five and a half years.

“I couldn’t imagine a more reprehensible fraud,” he said.

The ex Kilkenny player pretended he was seriously ill for years, tricking 22 friends and acquaintances into paying for his supposed treatment.

He stood in the dock and did not react when the sentence was handed down at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court this afternoon.

Jailing him, Judge Martin Nolan said Carey had exploited “good natured people” who had wanted to “help a person in need.” He “took advantage” of people he knew and what he did was “grossly wrong”, the judge said.

The once-celebrated sportsman, who blamed his “desperate” financial circumstances for the fraud had suffered a “stunning” fall from grace and was now a “pariah,” his defence said.

Carey’s victims included billionaire businessman Denis O’Brien; a woman being treated for cancer; a work colleague; a golf course designer; publicans and one of his own cousins.

Carey (54) admitted 10 counts of dishonestly by deception inducing 13 victims to make monetary payment to him after he fraudulently claimed to have cancer and needed finances to obtain treatment, between 2014 and 2022.

Some eight other similar charges and two of using a false instrument - fake hospital letters- were taken into consideration.

Carey had been due to stand trial in July but instead entered guilty pleas. A pre-sentence hearing took place last week and Carey was remanded in custody ahead of today, with Judge Nolan warning jail was “inevitable.”

Amy Molloy and Andrew Phelan

Turned up in the same suit as Friday.

The Kilkenny based journalists and pundits who didn’t have this called out at a much earlier point have a serious stain on their hands. There’s no way this carry on wasn’t common knowledge amongst people with their ear to the ground. Cody bringing him on board in 2021 seems utterly bizarre in light of this.

I’d say the 400k for the charges before the court is a fraction of the real amount.

Seems a tad harsh but he probably will only do 3.5 or 4 years. Like u say a desperately sad story. Dj was a sight to behold in his prime. I’m genuinely glad my aul lad isn’t around to see this. A shocking fall from grace.

I hope he took Marty Morrissey for a few quid.

Unlikely …Euros only go in one direction, according to Marty

There is a consecutive element to the sentence. 4 years and 1 and a half years. That’ll guarantee an appeal against severity. Consecutive sentencing is not that common.

At least one Kilkenny man will achieve the 5 in a row. I’ll get my coat.

I don’t know was it that common knowledge that he’d conned people to this extent.

I knew of a €5k ‘loan’ back as far as 2008/09. But it was just a loan.

DJ was regarded as a poor businessman.

Cody pretty much put him in exile the year he was involved and DJ spoke openly about how much of a prick Cody was to him (Hi DJ).

Some dark enough stuff in the indo.

I remember before a Covid AI Semi vs Waterford in an empty Croke Park and DJ being banished to the Cusack Stand side on his own, which seemed pretty grim. Seemed circumspect at the time. Was Carey pushing for the son to start and Cody overruled him or something along those lines?

Obviously the 400k before the courts is probably only the tip of the iceberg.does it say in the book how much he has actually defrauded people?he also had a loan of roughly 9 million written off in its entireity…and its all spent

He’ll have plenty of time to get back into handball.

Now’s he’s been given a prison sentence Ireland’s collective psyche will tilt to feeling sorry for DJ. It’s just the way we are, despite his contemptible behaviour. We’re already seeing the opinion pieces focusing on the distasteful jokes & slagging about him.

I reckon Carlow Weather and the missus are going to be the first to be turnt on for profiting off the sorry tale. They’d be well advised to make a decent contribution of the proceeds of the buke to a Cancer charity quick sharp before the tide turns.

He’s tough on white collar crime. That’s possibly the ex-Garda in him. That’s DJ, Brennie Mullin, the Garlic man and Michael Lynn that he’s given a right good hammering to.

His pattern of sentencing hasn’t gone unnoticed with Waterford Whispers.
