Changing number plates

I haven’t bought a car for nearly a decade but I was taking a look over the weekend at prices of a 4/5 year old cars (both ICE and EV), I was flabbergasted. Inflation has really set in. I’ll be sweating the asset for another while.

COVID and brexit have combined to fuck the second hand car market

And yet the road is full of high spec nearly new second hands?

Price of some new models are up around 70% over the last 6 years. Lads are selling 2nd hands cars for similar money to what they would have originally been bought for 8 years ago.

In a lot of cases I think are looking at what the 2nd hand cars are costing and just opting to go new instead with the extra comfort and bonuses that provides.

The market seems to have managed to fool people into thinking that once cars hit a certain mileage they are to be disbanded.I’ve hit 290k miles on my current car and will knock another 50k out of it.

Fair play

spot on

Pathetic. Number plates became a joke when they changed them in 2013 because Paddy was superstitious.

In 2015 a 6 year old family saloon car would have set you back something in the region of 12,000 euros. €12,000 might get you an equivalent 11 or 12 year old car nowadays.

Or put it another way, you’d be looking at over €20,000 for a 6 year old family saloon now.

I’m in the market now for a 7 seater and will probably only be able to afford an 8 or 9 year old Kia Sorrento or Hyundai Santa Fe. In an ideal world, I’d like to go electric but I’m not going shelling out €600 a month or getting stuck in a PCP cycle, especially when the current car is probably only worth €1500 to trade in. I’d need to save up €15,000 to put as a down payment for a brand new car but fuck that.

Affordable 7 seaters in ev range are very limited. Its by a distance the one sector that needs improving.

Game over ICE

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) will significantly improve electric vehicles (EVs) in several ways:

  1. Higher Energy Density SSBs store more energy in the same space, allowing for longer driving ranges without increasing battery size or weight. Some estimates suggest a 2x increase in energy density compared to lithium-ion batteries. 2. Faster Charging Solid electrolytes can handle higher currents, reducing charging times. EVs could charge in minutes instead of hours, making long-distance travel more convenient. 3. Improved Safety Solid-state batteries use a solid electrolyte instead of a flammable liquid, reducing the risk of fires or thermal runaway. They are also more resistant to high temperatures and physical damage. 4. Longer Lifespan Less degradation over charge cycles means SSBs could last much longer than current lithium-ion batteries. This reduces the need for battery replacements and improves EV resale value. 5. Lighter and More Compact Design With higher energy density and no need for bulky cooling systems, SSBs can reduce vehicle weight. Lighter cars improve efficiency, leading to better performance and range. 6. Lower Environmental Impact Some SSB designs reduce reliance on rare materials like cobalt and lithium, making them more sustainable. Higher efficiency means less battery production is needed for the same range.

Solid-state batteries will make EVs more practical, efficient, and safer, enhancing the overall driving experience.

I bought a van during covid and it’s worth around the same now as I payed for it then even though there’s over 100k more Kms on it.

So what you’re saying is anyone who buys an EV now will be left with a worthless pile of metal when these new batteries are launched?

Technology improves mate

That’s what I took from it.

weird you didnt take it the same stance when EVs came out first in relation to your fossil fuel ICE car
