The Galway Criticism Thread

What? The happy Christmas part? Cheers flatty.

@anon7035031 - I was in the scratcher pretty damn early last night. This desert air is playing puck with my sinuses. @KinvarasPassion - help please.

Saline pal. Salt water.

Short of that a bit of intense NLP can fool your pituitary gland into clearing them periodically.

Nice one - using a mix of saline and NLP sodium bicarb. Very interested as to how NLP might work on that…

I received a call today from a former work colleague (my ex manager) sounding me out about the prospect of a position opening up in his company. I previously worked for the company before it was the acquired by another company and the Belfast branch closed down. I recently switched jobs which saw a nice increase in salary so I’m not in any particular need to change positions. The company I would be moving to would be a much bigger than my current employers and salary would be similar to what I’m currently working on but I’d imagine the cost of living would be a lot less than is currently the case in Dublin.

Can anyone talk me through the pros and cons of living in Galway City. I’m meeting him for lunch on Friday to be sold on the prospect.

Pros - You are near Limerick.
Cons - read this thread from start to finish - a chap like you will be dead within 6 months unless you drink the shit out of every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Is it the Irn Bru capital of the world?

One third crustie - one third hipster -one third roaster.

There isn’t a normal pub or cafe in the town to socialize in. The drinking culture is off the charts… you’d nearly be kicked up and down shop street if you said you didn’t drink… They are also die hard premiership fans… the city is split between Liverpool and Man Utd fans like no where else i’ve ever seen… I was embarrassed by the carry on of them one day while socializing in the city when both clubs were playing each other… It made me question my very own existence and I contemplated suicide after it such was my despair with the human race.

Galways way more chilled out @Nembo_Kid. I’ve lived in Dublin and London and do miss the buzz and anonymity of living in a real big city on occasion but the more relaxed lifestyle suits me more these days.
If you think you may be the same way inclined than moving here would be a positive in that regard.

You will need a degree of tolerance for krusties, boggers, hipsters, Mayo’s, tourists, students, Donegals, new age hippies, knackers, Connacht Rugby bandwagoners, stags, parish pump politics and semi alcoholic wannabe hurlers but you’ve put up with worse on TFK in fairness.

You will fit in well with the smelly crustie cunts. Changing the shirt once a week will be sufficient.

It’s not a shirt wearing environment, it will be round neck jumpers for me. One of my custom made silk shirts probably cost more than your entire wardrobe.

I doubt it.

In anticipation of your arrival the city council has just named a section as the latin quarter kid.

The downsides are the rain, the smallness of the place and the population includes a sizeable amount of hipsters and hippies and occasionally angry roasters.

The pluses are the easy pace of life, the people are way more relaxed than the road rage vibe you get in dublin and the seaside and beautiful countryside of connemara is on your doorstep. And football the way it was supposed to be played. Outside of travellers theres almost no scum, you never have to be wary in any place at any time. Give it a year im sure you’d get a move to dublin quick enough if necessary. You also get full rights to the clique sub forum on here.

Great internetting

I very much doubt it too.
Nembo, it is one of the best places in the world to live. The only thing to be wary of is you wouldn’t under any circumstances want to live East of the river. However, if your work is based on the east side, the traffic is appalling.
Go for it.
It is one he’ll of a drinking culture though.
It is fucking fantastic at Christmas, and from may to September.

Heading to Galway for a night and living there are world’s apart.

Yes - one great night, versus one great lifetime. Thanks for pointing that out pal.

One bone of contention with that post, bud. I would say it rains a lot more in Galway than Dublin. This past winter aside, it is noticeable however much less it rains on the east coast than the west.

Point noted - I reckon east coast gets more intense rainfall events though.

Having said that, if @Nembo_Kid searches back through my recent posts he’ll find a link to Dunnes Stores and Paul Galvin’s cape at 50% off. Problem sorted.

Thanks for that but I’m not losing my accent, no way. I actually took to speaking with an even more menacing West Belfast accent in the last year down in Dublin and have found the benefits very good. I play astro with a few lads from work on an intermittent basis and have found my West Belfast accent has seen me receive much more of the ball when I berate them for not passing the ball in that tone. People seem to acquiesce to my demands more.

We usually went to Bundoran during parade season, parade season generally wasn’t too bad round our general vicinity but Papa’s employers would always be shut down that week so we spent lovely summers in Las Bundoran.

I could see myself getting into lots of confrontation in Galway, that would be awesome. I must invite The Border Bull down as well, we were in Galway for a stag before Christmas and he was involved in a physical altercation with a German that ended with him being removed from the premises.
